Stoneham Man Charged with DUI-Liquor on Highland Avenue

The following information was supplied by the Winchester Police Department. Charges listed do not indicate convictions.

3:38 a.m., Nov. 9: Officers were working a road detail for an NSTAR electric project on Highland Avenue when they saw a car slam on the breaks and hit the curb near by then bounced back into the road, nearly colliding with a parked minivan. The driver put the vehicle in reverse and pulled back into the lane, driving towards the officer.

The officer reported flashing his flashlight at the car and it came to a stop. The officer asked if the driver was OK, and the man behind the wheel replied, “I’m just driving.” The officer saw that the driver’s eyes were glossy and bloodshot and the man appeared sluggish behind the wheel. The officer could smell an odor of alcohol and told the driver that he had just hit the curb and asked again if he was ok. The driver replied, “Yeah, I’m fine. Just trying to get home.”

The officer collected the driver’s information, called for backup and asked the man if he had been drinking. The driver initially said, “Ahhhh, no,” but then said, “Well, I had a few beers,” after the officer told him he could smell alcohol.
