Updated: Child Struck by Car Returns Home

A young boy who was struck by a car Monday morning at 71 Woodside Road is back home.

On Monday morning, police reported that a car struck a 7-year-old boy around 10 a.m. at 71 Woodside Road

The boy was sent to the Children's Hospital in Boston, but has since returned home.

According to Sergeant in Charge of Safety, Tom Groux, the boy only suffered minor injuries. There were no broken bones, concussion and no stitches were needed.

The boy was riding his bike, trailing his 10-year-old brother, as the two were travelling along Woodside Road. The older brother motioned to his sibling to cross over the street and join him on the other side.

Groux believes that the boy rode off the sidewalk and crossed into traffic without looking, when he was struck by a car.

"He just darted out in front of traffic," Groux said. "The driver couldn't avoid him."

Luckily for the boy, the driver of the vehicle was only going 20 miles per hour. According to Groux, the driver had seen the older brother riding his bike ahead of him and slowed down to 10 mph below the speed limit.

"Luckily he saw the older brother," Groux said. "If the driver had been going the speed limit or above, it could have been a different result, but luckily everything worked out."

The boy was also wearing his helmet, which prevented any further injury.

Groux was also able to give him a ticket for a free slice of pizza at Joe's Main Street Pizza. The town has a policy that if you wear your helmet while riding a bike, you can get a free slice at Joe's.

When he saw the boy this morning, he was running around with his father and seemed to be fully recovered. The bike may have been mangled, but with the exception of a few scrapes and bruises, there were no serious injuries.

"You just have to wonder how many times the kid rode his bike in front of traffic without looking and gotten away with it," Groux said. "Maybe on some of the smaller streets, he didn't look both ways. But he's home now with just some minor cuts. I'm sure in the future he'll look before he crosses the street.
