Water Main Break Along Cambridge Street

A water main broke near the Winchester Arlington line Sunday night, causing homes in the area to be without water.

A little before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night, a water main broke along Cambridge Street, in between the Winchester Boat Club and the Arlington border.

"There was quite a bit of water," said Captain, John Surabian said. "We called the gas company because there was a small odor of natural gas in the area."

The Winchester fire department needed to use sandbags to prevent water from spilling into the homes, according to Surabian.

"The first plan of action is to divert the water from the homes," he said.

According to the Winchester Fire Department, the water has been shutdown in that area. The Department of Public Works said that approximately 35 to 40 homes have been affected by the break.

According to the DPW, an air pocket may have caused the water main to burst.

"We're waiting for the DPW to get over there and repair the broken line," Surabian said.

"The affected homes will be without water for a little while. We're not sure how long, but everyone is working as hard and as quick as they can to get it repaired."

There is no timetable for the water main to be repaired and the water restored to the area.
