Every community has to contend with drivers who speed and Winchester is no exception. So, with that in mind we recently asked you, our readers, this: Where is speeding a problem in Winchester?

Highland Avenue Near Music School Tabbed as Worst Speeding Spot

After reviewing your responses, the worst speeding spot in town is Highland Avenue near the Winchester Community Music School. A handful of people voted that this section of Highland Avenue was a troublesome area with regard to speeders.

"Highland (Avenue) by (Winchester Community) Music School. At night speeds reach 65 (miles per hour)," wrote reader linita on Winchester Patch. "Totally agree. And the town has removed so many of the crosswalks across Highland (Avenue)," added reader BAV.

Reader Dawn said that there are drivers on Highland Avenue "who are gunning it once they branch off from Main Street to get up the hill by the music school."

Finishing in second on the list was a two-way tie between the area of Wildwood Street and Woodside Road and Sargent Road. Each area received a pair of votes from our readers.

"The intersection of Wildwood and Woodside. Drivers race around the sharp corner, and don't use their indicators," wrote reader Sally K. Dale. "Continuing on Wildwood does turn nearly 90 degrees, but you are technically continuing on so no indicators should be required (as opposed to turning off onto Woodside, even though in one direction it's almost a straight shot). Speed is a problem though as I believe it's posted as 20 (miles per hour) there," added reader John Schwartz.

As far as Sargent Road is concerned, reader Dawn said, "Certain people deeper in the neighborhood cutting through to get out to Highland at all hours have the pedal to the metal. There is enough of a hill in the road that you can't see what's coming up and there are many kids outside playing."

More Speeding Spots in Winchester

One of our readers put out a call for action given the speeders on Eaton Street.

"Speeders fly down (or up) the hilly street (easily over 40 (miles per hour), while the official limit is 30 (miles per hour) which is way too high for a residential street)," claims GC. "Recently our cat was killed by a speeding car, a couple of months earlier a neighbor's dog died the same way. While our children have an absolute ban for crossing the street (and are responsible - we hope - enough to listen) it is (only a) matter of time before a child is killed if something is not done about it. We have nearly 20 kids on this street."

Other areas identified as speeding spots include:

  • Fenwick Road
  • Corner of Main and Swanton Streets
  • Ridge Street
  • Arlington Street
  • Lockeland Road
  • Washington Street
  • Lloyd Street
  • Cross Street
