Winchester Departments to Practice School Safety Drill

Winchester High School will practice a full-scale lock down scenario that involves a scripted threat scenario.

Over the past several years the school department’s Incident Management Teams (IMTs), both at the district level and the individual schools, have worked with members of the town public safety agencies along with the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) School Threat Assessment Response Systems (STARS) task force to plan, practice and implement safe school policies and procedures.

The June 7 event at Winchester High School will practice a full-scale lockdown drill involving all students and staff. A scripted active threat scenario involving the Winchester Police Department and several area police departments along with the Winchester Fire Department will be participating in this drill.

The school district incident management team is working with a group of students from the Middlesex Community College Theater Department under the direction of Chair Karen Oster and alumni Amy Carroll to carry out this active drill. No Winchester students or staff members will be involved in this part of the drill.

The high school will be practicing its safe school protocols involving lockdown and evacuation. This drill will start after the school day begins and will be completed by lunchtime. The traffic will be rerouted around Winchester High School during this time.  A letter from Winchester High School principal Dr. Tom Gwin has been sent out to all Winchester High School student families informing them of this drill. has provided an email with information on this event to all families within the Winchester Public School system.
