Winchester Fire Fighters Learn How to Handle Pets in Emergencies

The following information was sent to Winchester Patch by Sommer Aweidah of Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn.

The Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital of Woburn worked with the Winchester Fire Department to train fire fighters on how to stabilize a dog or cat rescued from a fire.

Many fire departments have been issued oxygen masks for dogs and cats in the Commonwealth, and the MVRH taught fire fighters how to preform CPR and first aid on pets over a one week course.

According to their website, fire fighters learned how to check vital signs on pets, used dummies to practice CPR, and studied basic anatomy of canines and felines. Fire fighters learned how to check a femoral pulse, load an injured animal on a backboard, how to put oxygen masks on and how to handle a frightened animal.
