On Wednesday, August 3, a Wedgemere Avenue resident told police that she was walking her dog along Oxford Street when the SUV parked on the side of the road.

The woman told police that a heavy set white male exited the car and showed her a wanted poster with a photograph of a large black male wearing orange coveralls, similar to something prisoners would wear, and asked her if she saw this man.

According to the Wedgemere woman, the man told her that he works for fugitive recovery and he was looking for the man in the poster who is wanted for “a lot of things.”

According to police Lieutenant Peter MacDonnell, no law enforcement agent checked in with police and if residents see the vehicle again to call the police station immediately.

“No one came to the station,” MacDonnell said. “We’ve put extra patrols down there and we’ve put out information about the car. We’re on the lookout for it and if we see it we’re going to stop it. But we’ve had no luck so far, we haven’t seen it since.”

The woman told police that, while talking with the man, he made a gesture over to an Oxford Street home. According to the woman, the owners of the home have been away.

With the recent and in Winchester, MacDonnell urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to notify the police station immediately.

“Winchester has been hit hard with breaking and entering of homes and cars,” MacDonnell said. “It would make it a lot easier for Winchester Police to do our job and to catch these people if residents were alert and to be mindful of what’s going on with their property and with their neighbors.

“And if they see something, they need to call police right away without notifying these people. We haven’t been getting good descriptions or license plate numbers and too often residents are alerting these people that they’re going to call the police, that doesn’t work well for us.”
