Winchester Police Respond to Car Break-ins

And now are beginning to see an increase in car break-ins. From Thursday, July 28 to Saturday, July 29, nine cars were broken into around town.

The cars were parked along Washington Street, Irving Street, Harvard Street, Nelson Street and Webster Street.

The primary item taken from all the vehicles were GPS systems. All of the cars, except the vehicle parked along Webster Street, had left their doors unlocked.

The perpetrator broke the window of the car located on Webster Street and stole a Hewlett Packard laptop computer ($700) and its carrying case ($400).

“People need to lock their cars up and don’t leave valuables in them,” Winchester Police Lieutenant Peter MacDonnell said. “If people lock their cars up that will pretty much solve the problem.”

According to Lt. MacDonnell, an increase in car and home break-ins over the last month is not that unusual for the summer months.

“We’re not getting more than we usually get,” MacDonnell said. “But there’s definitely been an increase in both crimes. We’ve seen an uptick in motor vehicle breaks and home break-ins recently.”
