Quigley said publicly that her brother had previously been a Navy SEAL where he was trained as a sniper and medical corpsman and left the service four years ago to provide security for American officials overseas.

Superintendent William H. McAlduff Jr. said all school and municipal flags will be flown at half staff in his memory.

Doherty is listed as a member of the Varsity Tennis team and the Varsity Wrestling team in the 1988 yearbook, according to FOX 25.

Chief Robert Ferullo and WPD Capt. Jim Martin, along with State Rep. Jim Dwyer, offered condolences to the family Thursday morning.

"Our sympathy goes out to Mr. Doherty’s family here in Woburn, and at his home in California," said Mayor Galvin. "We extend our solemn gratitude for his heroism that day—giving his life fighting to protect those in the U.S. Libyan Embassy under attack from what now appears to be a coordinated act of terrorism that killed three others, including U.S. Libyan Ambassador Chris Stevens. As a city, we will continue to support Mr. Doherty’s family here in any way we can. Please respect and honor this hero’s memory by giving his family some privacy at this moment.”
