MBTA Proposes 23 Percent Fare Hike

The MBTA's new proposal, released Wednesday, also includes service reductions and eliminations, as well as a hiring freeze on all non-critical positions. However, the route eliminations do not impact Winchester directly.

That being said, Winchester residents, like everyone else, will be paying more to ride the T if the proposal is approved.

Here are the recommended fare increases:

  • Local bus fares with a Charlie Card would go up a quarter to $1.50. The current fare is $1.25.
  • Subway fares would be $2, 30 cents more than the current rate of $1.70.

MBTA staff members are scheduled to present the recommendations to the MBTA’s board for approval on April 4, according to the release. The changes would go into effect July 1, the beginning of fiscal year 2013.
