No Flooding This Time Around

The dry summer has helped Winchester avoid any flooding from this three-day rainstorm.

It's been here for three days now, but the storm that has soaked Massachusetts is finally leaving.

And after three days of steady rain, Winchester has been left in pretty good shape. There is always a concern of flooding in any town, but with the Aberjona River cutting right across the town center, there's always an increased chance of water clogging the streets.

But even though towns in other parts of Massachusetts were issued flood warnings, Winchester stayed relatively dry.

"We did well; there were no real flooding issues," said Stephen Swymer, the Water and Sewer Operations Manager in Winchester.

According to Swymer, the town accumulated approximately five inches of rain since Sunday with 2 ½ inches coming from 7 a.m. Wednesday morning until around noon that day.

Swymer accredited the lack of flooding in town to the relative dry month that New England has had. Before this current storm, the last heavy rain that soaked the area occurred back on July 10.

"The ground was pretty dry, so it soaked up the rain pretty well," Swymer said. "This also helped replenish our reservoirs."

Even with Winchester's history of flooding, Swymer wasn't too surprised that the town avoided a water overflow this time around.

"There was so little rain, plus the rain was spread out over three days," Swymer said. "It's not surprising there were no floods, it's been extremely dry."
