Town Has Option to Purchase Land from Winning Farm

Winchester holds the option to purchase two lots of land for $1.

After five years of clean-up, portions of  are ready for use and up for sale. As part of a 1999 agreement, the town of Winchester has the first option to purchase the property.

Winning Farm spreads through Woburn, Lexington and Winchester, and portions of it were once used as a landfill. Although the property is mostly in Woburn, Winchester used the landfill for disposal of construction and demolition debris.

In 2006, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) began cleaning up the southwest portion of the Village at Winning Farm landfill property by excavating land, and removing and disposing of the waste. The Winning Farm Dumping Ground, located at 462 Lexington St. in Woburn was also cleaned up.

Now that the DEP has signed off on the completion of the clean-up program, Winchester Town Meeting has the opportunity to buy the 84,000 square feet of land for $1.

Winchester Town Meeting will begin on April 23.

What strings are attached? Sounds like a reasonable deal, unless there are additional issues which arise, in which case we could spend lots of money on this "free" land.

That's a good question. This will surely be raised at Town Meeting.
