Voters Shoot Down Funding $350K Capital Stabilization Technology Fund

Voters rejected funding a $350,000 capital stabilization technology fund on Tuesday, according to special dual election results from the Winchester Town Clerk's office.

Of the 14,366 active registered voters in Winchester, 45 percent (6,404 voters) voted in the special state election, while 44 percent (6,300 voters) participated in the special town election.

In the special town election, residents voted 3,415-2,885 against funding the technology fund. Of the eight precincts in Winchester, only Precinct 3 voted in favor of the warrant article.

The special town election ballot featured one question, which asked voters if they would allow the town to assess additional real estate and personal property taxes for fiscal 2013 starting July 1 for the purpose of funding a $350,000 capital stabilization technology fund to be used to pay for equipment, software and professional services for infrastructure of town-wide network, including wireless, major communications upgrades and fiber cable backbone expansion or replacement.

Markey Wins Winchester, Senate Race

Meanwhile, Democrat Edward Markey beat Republican challenger Gabriel Gomez in the special state election. In Winchester, Markey won 3,432-2,932 after carrying Precincts 1-4 and 8, while Gomez carried Precincts 5-7. Twelve Visions Party candidate Richard Heos tallied 22 votes, finishing in third place.

Markey, a longtime Congressman, will fill the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry after he became the Secretary of State for the Obama Administration.
