Blank Ballots

One of the noticeable trends on the Town Elections was the number of blank ballots for the various positions. In the selectmen race, out of the 3,972 people that voted, 439 submitted blank ballots for that race.

Even though John Sullivan had no competition for town moderator, 1,239 blank ballots were submitted, while Sullivan received 2,703 votes. Lance Grenzeback (2,014) and Mary McKenna-Sullivan (2,040) ran unopposed for the Planning Board, but there were still 3,867 blank ballots.

The override question saw 117 blank ballots out of the 3,972 that voted.

According to Town Clerk, Mary Ellen Lannon, seeing a number of blank ballots for some of the positions isn’t too surprising for a Town Election.

“Statistically there’s always a high number of blanks,” Lannon said. “That’s been my experience in doing this for nearly 20 years. It just shows that people won’t cast their vote if they don’t know the person they’re voting for.”
