Welcome!

An introduction to the Winchester Historical Society and its Executive Director, Rebekah Beaulieu.

I’m so pleased to have been asked to participate in Winchester Patch’s new blog project!  For those who don’t know me, I’m the Executive Director of the Winchester Historical Society and the Sanborn House.  I’d like to take this first entry as an opportunity to introduce you to the work of the Historical Society and to tell you a bit about myself:

The Winchester Historical Society was founded in 1933 as a successor to the Winchester Historical and Genealogical Society.  Since 2006, the Society has served as steward to the Sanborn House, a Beaux-Arts mansion designed by the Boston firm of Hill & James in 1907 and located at the corner of High and Cambridge Streets, just north of Ambrose School.  Christened the Sanborn House Historical and Cultural Center by the Society, we have opened our doors to the community in the form of Society programs and events, and have encouraged use of the Sanborn House for meeting, event, and long-term office rentals.  Not to mention our expansive restoration of the House, for which we currently have four (yes, four!) projects underway.  I can’t wait to tell you more about our progress in the coming months.

As for my part, I first joined the Winchester Historical Society in January of 2010.  My role as Director is to manage all day-to-day activities of the Society and the Sanborn House, in addition to consulting the Board of Directors on fundraising, programming, and outreach activities.  Since my arrival, we can now offer open hours of 10 AM to 4 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays – I welcome you to set up a time to take a tour or talk about an event you’d like to host at the House!

In addition to my work in Winchester, I am also a full-time doctoral student in the American and New England Studies program at Boston University.  I live with my fiancé and two cats in Newton.  Confession time:  I am not a Winchester resident.  However, I can’t overstate how much I enjoy coming to work in the Winchester community.

I look forward to sharing updates on behalf of the Historical Society, as well as talking about general Winchester history, activities and news.  On behalf of the Winchester Historical Society and the other Winchester Patch bloggers, welcome!
