[Editor's note: The following is the speech given by Winchester High School Principal Thomas Gwin during the Class of 2013's commencement ceremony on Sunday.]

Congratulations to an extraordinary group of young women and men. The students of the Class of 2013 have carried themselves with class and distinction throughout their four years at the high school. You should be extremely proud of yourselves and your accomplishments. You have been an outstanding class.

When I was thinking about what I would say to the Class of 2013, I thought of my own high school class, the Class of 1972 of Salem High School, just a few miles down the road. Last November our class celebrated its 40th reunion. I rarely see any of my classmates from Salem High. At the reunion, I sat with Phil, my best friend from kindergarten through senior year. My friend Ted, who had a band while we were in school, still has a band called Brittanica that played at the reunion. I danced with Harriet, my senior prom date. Although we hardly see each other, after 40 years, the bonds, connections, and relationships were as strong as ever. It was like no time had passed at all. We picked up right where we left off in 72. The bonds we made while we were in high school we’re still there.

Your class has formed the same kinds of strong connections. I feel a very strong bond to you. As you go off to college, work or the military, you will make new friends. You will start families and develop even more friendships with the parents of your children’s friends. As time goes on, you may not see your high school friends very often but those bonds and relationships will hold steadfast. You will know what I am talking about when your class has its 40th reunion in 2053. You will reconnect and talk about those old times:

You still will be making fun of Mr. Chapman’s blue vest. You may still be talking about my swag. Marshall and Brian will have to go fishing before the event.

And one important thing- don’t forget to invite me as I plan on still being around. So Class of 2013-Congratulations! It was an honor and privilege to serve as your principal.
