Winchester Prepares for Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

The Winchester Multicultural Network and the Family Action Network will be holding their annual celebration.

The Winchester Multicultural Network together with the Family Action Network (FAN) will host their annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday on Monday, Jan. 16 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Metcalf Hall at the . Enjoy craft activities, refreshments, and an art display by Winchester students starting at 3 pm. Concert begins at 4 pm.

This important community event features musician Guy Mendilow, whose band was awarded Boston's Best World Music Act in the Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll 2011. A citizen of Israel, Great Britain and the United States, Mendilow continues to immerse himself in new cultures, seeking opportunities to learn languages and collaborate with instrument builders and performers. To date, he has lived and performed in South Africa, Israel, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. He sings in six tongues and is fluent in four.

An educator deeply committed to using musical improvisation as a tool for communication, Mendilow’s innovative workshops, residencies and teacher trainings have led to ongoing collaborations with cutting-edge international social justice organizations like Seeds of Peace, which mediates between Israeli and Palestinian youth, and to invitations to present at schools and conferences across the United States and Brazil. Mendilow holds a Masters in Music and international Dalcroze Eurhythmics certification from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA.

“Come to our event and enjoy Guy Mendilow’s engaging performance along with art and writing from our Winchester students, multicultural books for sale from Book Ends, craft activities for the children, and refreshments as we celebrate and remember Martin Luther King Jr. and what he stood for,” says Chairperson Susan Lewis, who thanks Whole Foods Market for their support.
