A Winchester resident was recently initiated by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, according to a press statement.

Jeevan Mathew, of Winchester, was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, according to the statement. Mathew is pursuing a degree in Political Science at University of Massachusetts, reads the statement.

Mathew is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni invited to join Phi Kappa Phi each year, according to the statement. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter, reads the statement.

Ten percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, with at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership, according to the statement. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction, the statement adds.
