Winchester Students Had a Chance to Be 'Principal For a Day'

The Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence held a raffle where the winner helped lead their school for a day.

Heading into school on June 7 Kathryn Manganaro was a little more nervous than usual. There was no test she was worried about. She didn’t forget to do her homework.

The second-grader was one of seven students in the Winchester Public Schools that got to be “Principal for a Day.”

“We went to a lot of meeting and gave a lot of messages to people,” Manganaro said of her day.

Students bought raffles and one winner was chosen at every school. Manganaro was selected to lead for the day. Drew Strobeck was principal at , Abby Slatalla was in charge at , at the principal was Daniel Addonizio, Darya Smolina held the clipboard at . The principal was Jack Keane and at it was Julien Blundell.

The “Principal for a Day” raffle was sponsored by the . The “principal’s” duties were to lead assemblies, making announcements, assisting at faculty meetings and managing a kindergarten class.

“It was nice to have the extra help,” said Vinson-Owen Principal, Bob Arsenault.

Manganaro went to every classroom with Arsenault, bringing with her a clipboard, just in case she needed to answer any questions. Students also benefited from having Managanaro in charge as she gave students an extra 10 minutes of recess and canceled all homework for the day.

“I was nervous and excited,” said Manganaro, who will be the first class to graduate from the new Vinson-Owen school.

“It was fun sharing everything a principal does over the course of the day,” Arsenault said.
