Winchester Volleyball Team to Raise Money for Breast Cancer

The team will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The Winchester girls volleyball team will be participating in the second annual "Serve for the Cure" Friday at 7 p.m. in the Gymnasium.

The Sachems will take on Burlington in a match that will raise funds to support the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. The suggested entrance fee is $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors, students and children, with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards the charity.

"It seemed like a great opportunity to raise some money, and the girls could play in front of a bigger crowd," coach John Fleming said. “Last year was the first year we did it and we’re hoping this would be a tradition that we can continue.

A year ago, Fleming was looking for something his team could do to give back to the community, and the team decided, since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they would focus on the Susa G. Komen Fund.

"We wanted to do something to get the girls involved in the community," Fleming said.

Last year, the team raised over $1,200 for the fund, this year Fleming is hoping to surpass $2,000.

The team is planning to wear pink t-shirts during the match. There will also be pink t-shirts on sale at the game for $20.

Last season, Winchester defeated Lexington in the match, 3-1, and it propelled them to finish the season 4-1 and make the tournament. Winchester is hoping for a similar outcome this season.

“That was a huge momentum builder for us,” Fleming said.

But in the end, Fleming just wants his team to have an opportunity to give back to the community.

“Being a varsity athlete takes up a lot of time,” Fleming said. “It’s good for these kids to get involved in the community – to support the town and the school. It’s important to give back and to be involved at a young age.”
