High School Teams to Play Their First Games

The boys and girl's soccer team kickoff the season on Wednesday, while the football team hosts Stoughton on Saturday.

This is a big week for Winchester athletics. The fall season is finally here.

While the beginning of any season is new and exciting this fall should be a little different for a lot of the Sachem sport teams. This is the first full season these teams will be playing on the new Manchester Field. The majority of Winchester High School's sports teams haven't had a home game in over three years.

The field opened in November, but by that time, a lot of the fall teams had already wrapped up their season.

But lacking a field hasn't hurt the Winchester teams so far, and now that they have one, who knows how successful they can be. The boy's soccer team brings back the most talent in the league, while the girl's team has dominated play in the Middlesex League for the past few years.

The football team will go from having no home games to having eight, although the most important game of the season will be on the road. That comes Sep. 24 against Reading, last year's league champs and defending Super Bowl winners.

It all starts this Wednesday, which also happens to be the first day of school, as the boys and girl's soccer team gets the season under way. The boy's team will be travelling to Reading to take on the Rockets at 3:45 p.m. The girls, on the other hand, will be hosting Reading at the same time.

Then on Friday the field hockey and volleyball teams commence their season. The Sachems field hockey team will be travelling up to Reading for a 3:30 p.m. game, while the volleyball team will be hosting the Rockets for a 4 p.m. match.

Saturday is the big day of the week as the football team makes their debut. The Sachems will try and continue their eight-game winning streak they finished last year with. Stoughton will be Winchester's first opponent on Manchester Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m.

As soon as that game ends, the boy's soccer team is back on the field for its first home game of the season, as the Sachems will be hosting Stoneham at 4:30 p.m. At the same time, the girl's team will be travelling to Stoneham for a game.

The girl's swimming team will also compete in its first meet of the season, as the Sachems will head to Reading for a 5 p.m. meet.

And after about a month of practices and scrimmages, the Winchester Pop Warner team finally begins their season. While the league is still awaiting confirmation, it seems as though the league will be heading up to Wakefield for their first game on Sunday morning.
