Sachems Win King Philip Wrestling Tournament

Winchester wrestling started its season off on the right foot.

The following was submitted by Winchester parent, Phillip Stern.

The continued its long winning tradition by taking home the first place trophy at the season-opening King Philip Tournament in Wrentham on Saturday.

Winchester had eight wrestlers compete in the championship finals and another five in the consolation finals. In fact, Winchester had such an overwhelming lead over the other eleven teams competing in the tournament that they clinched first place before the championship round began.

Three Sachems took home gold medals.  Senior Captain Dan Fallon pinned his way through the first three rounds and then eked out a 2-0 victory over No. 2 seed Jake Genereaux of Duxbury in the finals. Freshman Ryan Kelley won his
weight division with four straight pins, defeating the No. 4 and No. 1 seeds en
route to the finals.

TJ Boudreau got the third championship for the Sachems, following two decisive pins in his early matches with a nail-biter in the finals. He tied the match at the buzzer and then got a takedown to win in overtime.

Winchester’s senior captains led the way. All four reached the championship finals.

In addition to Fallon’s first place, Steve Spry, Cameron Horsey, and Nick Cashion took home second place medals. Horsey had two of the fastest pins of the day, both in less than 15 seconds. Cashion’s victory in the semifinals was his 100th career Varsity win, a milestone reached by very few high school wrestlers.

In addition, Quinn Gregory and Drew Piispanen took second place; Joe Fallon and Dan McGurl took third; and Jordan Darby, Garret Ludwig, and Tristan Hardy took fourth place in their weight classes.

Coach Larry Tremblay once again has a deep and talented team to compete for another state championship. Thirteen of his wrestlers placed at this first meet
of the season, and the other eight also contributed to the team victory.
