Sports Recap: High School Athletics Under Way

The football team began its practices on Monday, while the rest of the high school sports started on Thursday.

It's been a little more than two months now since the Winchester High School athletic teams last met on the field to practice. But this past Monday saw the football team step onto Knowlton Stadium at McCall Middle School for their first practice of the season.

This will be the first time the Sachems will experience a home-season in three years since the completion of Manchester Field last November. Winchester played one game on the state-of-the-art field last season – on Thanksgiving – but this season the Sachems will have eight games on the field.

This is also a good opportunity for Winchester to continue its eight-game winning streak that it ended last year with. While practice started Monday, the team was in full pads by Thursday and played its first scrimmage on Saturday.

While the football team got to begin their practice at the beginning of the week, the rest of the high school athletic teams had to wait until Thursday to start their fall season. Boys and girls soccer, volleyball, field hockey, cross country and swimming are all under way. The high school golf team will have to wait until Tuesday, August 31 until they can commence their season.

The high school wasn't the only one of the town's sports programs to have a big week. Winchester Pop Warner played its first two games this past week in over 30 years.

On Tuesday, the Sachem elementary-aged football players travelled to Wilmington for an exhibition game to open up the season. Then on Thursday, the Sachems returned home as they hosted Reading at Manchester Field.

The scrimmage marked the first home game on the new field this school year. Three of the five pop warner teams were there to open the stadium.

Winchester Pop Warner starts their regular season on Sunday, Sep. 12, while the high school football team begins its season Sep. 11 at 1:30 p.m. against Stoughton. The first high school game of the season will be played by the girls soccer team as they host Nashoba Regional High School on Monday, Sep. 6 at 11 a.m.
