Sports Roundup: Lady Sachems Lacrosse Team Completes Impressive Week

Here's a look back at the week in Winchester sports.

It might have been spring break at , but there was no vacation for the team. The Sachems faced state champion Framingham and another Division I opponent, King Philip and kept their unbeaten start alive.

Winchester (6-0-1) overcame a 7-1 deficit against Framingham to tie 14-14 and followed that with a 17-11 win over King Philip.

"I felt like it was a big week and I actually feel really good because we had some players missing because of injury and I was happy some other girls stepped up," coach Suzanne Ontso said. "You hope you won't miss a beat but you never know during vacation week. Hopefully we gained some confidence."

Here's a look at the rest of the week in Winchester athletics:

Softball: The Sachems (4-2) handing Lexington its first defeat, crushing Belmont and then coming back to defeat Wakefield.

Rachael Smith pitched against Lexington, giving up four hits and striking out seven (including the final batter) in a complete game.

Emma Morton went 3 for 4 with two RBI and Julia Augenstern was 2 for 4 with two RBI as the Sachems exploded for five runs in the sixth to win 8-4.

Then Winchester beat Belmont 16-4 in a game that was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule. Winchester scored eight runs in the first inning and Morton hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

Morton scored the winning run in the eighth inning against Wakefield on a two-out single by Maddie Lepore. Down to their final out, the Sachems had tied the game in the seventh inning when Catherine Pitts doubled and Julia Staffiere singled her in. Smith also earned the win against Wakefield, pitching a complete game two-hitter and striking out seven, while Pitts and Staffier each had two hits.

Baseball: After losing its first four games against Medford (4-3), Reading (13-2), Stoneham (14-5) and Lexington (9-4), the Sachems bounced back to defeat

Boys lacrosse: Winchester opened its season with a 9-4 win over Weymouth but has had trouble scoring since then, dropping games against Lexington (7-3), Newton North (7-2) and Wellesley (8-4).

Boys tennis: The Sachems opened up with 5-0 wins against Reading and Stoneham and a 4-1 victory over Burlington, but its quest for an eighth league title in 10 years hit a bump after a 3-2 loss to Lexington.

Girls tennis: Like the boys, had no problems with Reading, Stoneham and Burlington, beating them all by 5-0 scores to start the season. But the girls fared better against Lexington, winning 4-0 to keep its five-year winning streak alive.
