Sports Roundup: Soccer Teams off to a Strong Start

The Winchester high school season is now a week old, and the soccer teams look impressive.

The first week of Winchester's sports is over and it was a fairly successful couple of days.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams continue to impress. The boy's team started the season 2-0 and has only allowed one goal, while scoring seven. The big hurdle last week came on Saturday when the Sachems defeated Stoneham, 4-1. Stoneham is a team that always gives Winchester a tough time because of their physical play, but the Sachems were able to keep them off-balance as they scored four second-half goals.

On the girl's side, the Sachems got off to a strong start defeating Reading in their home-opener 3-0. Sophomore Meg Hennessey scored twice to help lead Winchester.

The field hockey team also had a strong showing, as the Sachems, Emily van Seventer had two goals and two assists in Winchester's 4-0 win over Reading on Friday. Emily Savage and Alexis Zavez also scored for the Sachems. Annie DeRosa made nine saves en route to the shutout.

The Winchester football team got off to a rough start dropping its first game of the season 14-8 to Stoughton. The Sachems were down two scores at the start of the fourth quarter, but rallied back to cut the deficit to six. Winchester had the ball two more times late in the game, but was unable to get the tying score.

This is another big week for Winchester sports. On Tuesday, the golf team gets under way as they will be hosting Burlington High School. The boy's soccer team will have another difficult challenge this Tuesday as they will be travelling to Lexington to face off against the perennial league power. The girl's team will also be playing Lexington, but they will be competing against the Minutemen at home. Both soccer games will begin at 3:45 p.m.

The all-Lexington week will continue as the Sachem field hockey team will be hosting Lexington on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The swimming team continues its season as it travels to Stoneham for a 3:30 p.m. meet. The volleyball team will try and get on the winning track as they will travel to Lexington for a 4 p.m. game.

On Thursday, the cross country season gets rolling. The Sachems will travel to Stoneham for their first meet of the year. And on Friday, the football team will be hosting Swampscott in a 3:30 p.m. game. This is the last game before Winchester heads off to play at Reading in a big Friday night game that could determine the league champion.
