Sports Roundup: Winchester Lacrosse Continues Winning Streak

Here's a look back at the week in Winchester sports.

The Winchester entered the season with the goal of winning the Middlesex League. It didn't get off to a good start, losing its first league game to Lexington (and going 2-4 overall), but the Sachems have since won their last five league games. This week saw Winchester (7-4) crush Watertown 15-2 and win at

The Watertown win on Wednesday was the third league victory in which the Sachems allowed two goals or less (they also beat Melrose 14-2 and
Sophomore captain Chris O'Connell scored the winner in overtime against Reading, which entered the game with just one loss on the season and fell to 9-2.

"Winchester is a great club and we think we're a good club. It was two good clubs fighting it out like heavyweight champions," Reading coach Charlie Hardy said. "The scoring opportunities we had, we should have had 10 goals, not five. But that's the quality of kids Winchester has."

The league schedule continues this week as Winchester plays Burlington and Woburn before getting a second crack against Lexington on Thursday.

Girls lacrosse: The Sachems lost their first game of the season, falling to fellow unbeaten Westwood 19-5 last Friday. But Winchester rebounded on Tuesday, defeating Lexington 15-10 to improve its record to 10-1-2. Kate Wendell and Megan Hennessey each scored four goals against the Minutemen.

Softball: The Sachems (6-7) split a pair of games this week, losing to Lexington 6-1 on Monday and beating Belmont 15-2 on Wednesday.

Emma Morton hit a rare ground-rule triple against Lexington when the ball was lodged under the fence in centerfield. She then scored Winchester's lone run on a single by Catherine Pitts.

The Sachems offense came alive against Belmont, scoring multiple runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings. Pitts, Annie DeRosa, Kristina Shattuck and Maddie Lepore all had multiple hits.

Rachael Smith went the distance in both games and gave up a combined one earned run while striking out 10.

Baseball: Since on opening day, the Spartans haven't won another game. The Sachems made sure that streak continued last Friday, defeating Stoneham 7-1. But Winchester couldn't continue its momentum, losing to Belmont 13-6 the next day. The Sachems kept it close against undefeated Lexington on Monday but fell 6-1.
