Sports Roundup: Winchester Lacrosse Teams Impressive in Opening Round

Here's a look back at the week in Winchester sports.

The Winchester girls and boys lacrosse teams both won their opening games in the MIAA tournament by double digits, while the baseball allowed 20 runs in its last game. Here are the details:

Girls lacrosse:  Megan Hennessey, Kate Wendell and McKenzie Tucci all had hat tricks and six other Sachems scored as No. 3 Winchester opened the Division 2 North playoffs with a

The Sachems (15-2-2) will now host No. 6 Triton (13-6) on Monday at 4 p.m.

The other goal scorers were Emy Stratton, Maggie Connolly, Sarah Ohnigian, Michaela Chiuccariello, Talene Bush and Abby Wheeler. The defense was led by Georgia Mohrbacher, Remi DiRe and Gabby Bus, and Erin Maki was the winning goalie.

The Sachems scored the first 10 goals of the game and Hennessey, a sophomore, set a new team record with 41 assists on the season.

Boys lacrosse: Winchester senior Ed Dorr scored the team's first four goals as the in the opening round of the Division 2 East tournament. Winchester (13-5) was up four at halftime before starting the second half on a 7-1 run.

“We gave them a bunch of different looks and they weren’t able to handle our pressure defense,” Sachems coach John Pirini said.

Dartmouth fell to 12-7.

Winchester next faces No. 22 Bishop Feehan (12-5) an upset winner over No. 11 Beverly. The winner of the Winchester/Bishop Feehan game will travel to No. 3 Hingham (18-4) in the quarterfinal round Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Tennis: The Winchester boy’s tennis team (16-2) had a bye in the first round of the MIAA North Division 2 tournament. The top-seeded Sachems will host No. 8 Reading (12-6) Monday, June 6 at 3:30 p.m.

The top-seeded girl’s tennis team (18-0) will put their undefeated season on the line Monday at 5:30 p.m. against No. 8 Belmont (12-6).

Baseball: Winchester (7-13) closed the season with losses to Belmont and Lynnfield. Belmont, who needed to win to make the playoffs, put up five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 7-1 victory. The Sachems lone run came off consecutive doubles by Matt Gehrig and Dylan DiCecca.

Winchester then ended its season on a sour note, giving up a season-high amount of runs in a 20-4 loss to Lynnfield.
