Sports Roundup: Winchester Teams Prepare for the Playoffs

Here's a look back at the week in Winchester sports.

The regular season is coming to a close. The boys and girls lacrosse teams are , while the baseball and softball teams were unable to achieve the .500 record necessary for qualify for the state tournament.

Here's a recap of the past week in Winchester sports:

Girls lacrosse: Winchester (14-2-2) earned the No. 3 seed in the Division 2 North tournament and will face No. 14 Manchester Essex in the first round Thursday at Knowlton Stadium. If the Sachems win, their quarterfinal opponent will be either No. 6 Triton or No. 11 Newburyport, which meet Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Triton Stadium. The two teams seeded above Winchester are No. 1 Ipswich and No. 2 Weston.

The Sachems finished its Middlesex League championship season in style after defeating Woburn 16-6 on Tuesday. Sarah Ohnigian scored four times and Maggie Connolly had a goal and four assists in the win. The Sachems split against Belmont this season and swept everyone else in the league.

Boys lacrosse: Winchester (12-5) claimed the No. 6 seed in the Division 2 East tournament and will host No. 27 Dartmouth (10-6) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the preliminary round. If the Sachems win, they will play the No. 11 Beverly/No. 22 Bishop Feehan winner in the next round.

Winchester ended the regular season with nine wins in its last 10 games after defeating North Andover 7-5 on Thursday. The teams were tied at 5-5 after three quarters, but senior Ryan McGoff and junior Jesse Samek scored in the final period while goalie Alex Sharp (12 saves) kept North Andover from responding. Eddie Dorr scored three times for the Sachems.

Winchester's only loss this month was a last-second 4-3 defeat against Lexington, who went undefeated in the Middlesex League.

Softball: Winchester needed to win its last four games to make the state tournament, but it lost to Woburn 4-0 on Wednesday. Kristina Shattucks had two of the Sachems' four hits, while Rachael Smith gave up two earned runs and struck out eight in a complete-game performance.

Baseball: The Sachems (7-11) opened the week by losing 10-2 to Melrose on Saturday and 18-9 to Woburn on Monday, but bounced back with a 9-5 win over Watertown on Tuesday. It closed the season Friday against Belmont.

Ultimate: The lacrosse teams will be joined in the playoffs by Winchester's newest varsity team, (5-2), which will be competing in the state tournament in its first year. First, the ultimate team puts a five-game win streak on the line this weekend with games at Somerville and home on the turf against Arlington.
