Winchester Softball Scores Early and Often

The Sachems dominated Watertown, 18-2, on Wednesday afternoon.

The team jumped on Watertown early and never looked back, defeating the Raiders, 18-2, in a five inning victory at Filippello Park on Wednesday.

Emma Scavo Alarcon, Rose Soulotos and Leah Baccari lead the offense while Erika Kelly was steady on the mound for the Raiders, but the Sachems jumped out early and never looked back.

"We're improving," Raiders manager Jim Swift said about his young team. "We hit some balls hard but unfortunately they were right at people. I thought we stayed composed and tried to play the game out, but Winchester just had a good day."

The visiting Sachems were lead by Emma Morton, Gracie Van Adzin, Rachel Smith, Julia Augenstern, and Kristina Shattuck offensively, while Catherine Pitts was solid on the mound.

Before a single out was recorded in the first the Sachems were up 9-0 thanks to a two run home run by Morton, some wild pitches and walks, as well as singles by Smith and Augestern.

Scavo Alarcon put the Raiders on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to center, but the Sachems responded with five runs in the top half of the third thanks to a two run double by Morton, and an RBI single by Van Adzin, along with some more wild pitches and walks by the Watertown staff on the mound.

The Raiders tried to respond in the bottom half of the inning with a single and two stolen bases by Kelly, which was followed up by an RBI single to Soulotos, but the rally was cut short after that.

By the end of the fourth it was 17-2 due in large part to another RBI single from Morton, an infield single from Pitts, and more wild pitches and walks from the Watertown pitching staff, often not letting themselves out of innings.

Winchester capped off it's scoring in the fifth and final inning after an RBI single by Pitts.

Despite the seemingly easy victory, Winchester manager Steve Schwemier thought his team could use some work.

"We obviously hit the ball well," he said. "But ... I thought our defense could use a little work. We were a little sloppy at times, and in a game likes this, I'd like to see the girls continue to just play our game and not really worry about the opponent. I feel like at times we didn't do that today.  But overall I like the way we handled the game."
