Winchester to Host 13th annual Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series

Babe Ruth League, Inc. chose Sachem Youth Baseball/Softball for the honor.

The following information was supplied by Sachem Youth Baseball/Softball (SYBS).

Sachem Youth Baseball/Softball (SYBS) is pleased to announce that it has been selected by Babe Ruth League, Inc. to host the 13th annual Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series for 12-year olds in August 2012 at in Winchester.  The tournament will feature 10 teams from across the United States, including a team from Winchester, which will compete in a one-week tournament to determine a national champion.

This event marks the second opportunity for SYBS to host a Cal Ripken World Series.  In 2009, Winchester came together to make the 2009 World Series a memorable experience for the community, visitors from around the nation, and the young ballplayers who participated in the tournament.  During the 2009 World Series, Winchester’s host team made things even more entertaining by winning two games and narrowly missing out on advancing to the championship semi-finals.

“The selection of Winchester as the host for a second World Series in three years is a remarkable tribute to our community,” said Bob Nutile, SYBS President.  “The support of local residents, merchants, and our Board of Selectmen was critical to the success of the 2009 World Series.  With the experience we’ve gained and the terrific infrastructure that was built in 2009 to make it happen, the 2012 World Series should provide a great opportunity for Winchester to deliver a world-class baseball tournament.”

The on-field success of Winchester’s 2009 team was due in part to its hard work during the fall and winter months leading up to the tournament.  With that in mind, SYBS intends to take the following initial steps to assemble the 2012 World Series team and to conduct a two-stage tryout:

1. On Sept. 7 at Nutile Field from 6- 8 p.m., all candidates who would like to be considered for the World Series team are asked to attend a tryout.  If a player cannot attend, please contact Richard Michienzi at 781-929-6819 or by email at rmichienzi@verizon.net as soon as possible.

2. Following the tryout, approximately 20-25 players will be selected to participate in a fall baseball program.  This group will compete in a fall baseball league organized by Extra Innings.  The team will be managed by Bob Nutile and Richie Lanzillo.  The schedule will include doubleheader games played on Saturday mornings beginning at 9 a.m. from Sept. 10 to Oct. 15, either at Nutile Field or in a nearby town.

The fall program will provide one method to measure a player’s ability in order to determine a roster of 15 players who will represent Winchester in the 2012 Cal Ripken World Series.  To
select the final roster, SYBS will also consider evaluations from spring and summer coaches.

Finally, SYBS recognizes that many players also participate in other fall sports and will not be available for all games.  However, SYBS believes it is important for this team to continue playing competitive baseball in preparation for the World Series.  Accordingly, players are expected to make every effort to be available for as many games as possible.
