Winchester Wrestlers Move on to New England Championships

Nick Cashion and Ryan MacDonald both qualified through the consolation rounds.

The Winchester High wrestling team had a pretty good year.

The Sachems captured their 18th Middlesex League wrestling title, winning each match by at least 25 points, and sent eight athletes to the division 2 state championship meet.

Three of those wrestlers qualified for the MIAA All-State Championships held on Friday and Saturday at Salem High School’s Veteran’s Memorial Field House.

The grueling two-day meet was not quite as kind to the Sachems as were the regular season and division 2 meet.

That being said, the trip north wasn’t a complete loss by any means for Winchester, as they managed to qualify a pair of grapplers for next weekend’s New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships in New Haven, CT.

Nick Cashion (119) and Ryan MacDonald (140) both qualified through the consolation rounds.

MacDonald downed Dillon Gallagher of Franklin by pin at 3:42 in the second preliminary round, before dropping a 10-6 decision against Dean Tech’s Raul Torres in the quarterfinals, ending his bid for a state title. Next, he defeated Simon Dellea of Central Catholic on a 2-1 decision, and did the same to Frankie Weir of Hampshire, 8-3. After losing to Tyngsboro’s Ryan Niven in the consolation semifinals, MacDonald scored a 6-4 win against Concord-Carlisle’s Zach Bloom, to wrap up fifth place in the 140-pound division and a trip to New England’s wrestling championships.

Nick Cashion opened up his tournament with a 7-1 loss to Jonathan Costa of New Bedford, but then won his next three matches, all by decision, against Dedham’s Brian Coakley, Luis Gonzales from Southeastern Voke and Shawsheen’s Devon Pratt. Cashion would then fall to Costa again, this time 5-1, and to Lowell’s Brad Myers 6-1, sneaking in the backdoor with the sixth spot at 119.

Meanwhile, Quinn Gregory was knocked out of contention in his first match by eventual 112-pound champion Mike Mui of Hingham, being pinned by the state champion at 2:45 of their preliminary round battle. Gregory picked up his lone win of the meet over Hudson’s Vinny Bonina, grabbing an 11-5 decision in a first-round consolation match. Gregory was knocked out of the meet altogether in the consolation quarterfinals by Brandon Seibold of Chicopee.
