Winchester Wrestling off to Fast Start

The Sachems wrestling team continues where it left off last season winning their first three matches.

The following was submitted by Phil Stern.

The seniors on the wrestling team are used to winning. During their high school careers, these grapplers have suffered only three losses. Their freshman year the Sachems were the undefeated state champions. Their sophomore year, they lost to Burlington twice as Burlington went on to win the state championship, and last year their only loss was to North Andover, the eventual state champions.

Led by senior captains Don Muir, Ryan McDonald, Brandon Nowell, and junior captain Nick Cashion, the Sachems expect to have another successful wrestling season this year. They are off to a strong start, winning their first three matches of the year.

On Saturday, the team travelled to New Bedford for a tri-meet against the teams from New Bedford and Longmeadow. Against Longmeadow, Winchester recorded seven pins and a technical fall for a 54-13 victory.  In the second match, Winchester had another seven pins along with three decisions to win 49-18.

On Tuesday, Winchester travelled to Burlington to face the team that over the past few years has provided the toughest competition for our boys. Last year, in front of crowd of noisy fans, Winchester split the individual matches with Burlington, but won the team match by scoring more pins. This year the Sachems dominated the Burlington team, winning eight matches by pins, while not losing any matches for a 51-6 victory. Burlington's only points came by default because Winchester did not have a wrestler for one of the weight classes.

So far this year, Quinn Gregory, Nick Stern, Nick Cashion, Stephen Spry, Don Muir, Doug McDonald, Vinny McBeck, Ryan McDonald, Dan Fallon, Michael Stern, Brandon Nowell, Cam Horsey, and Connor Steckle have all recorded pins for the Sachems. In addition, Luke Pashos has won both of his matches. Expect this team to wrestle many strong matches this year as the veterans continue winning and some of the newer wrestlers gain experience over the course of the long season.
