A high level of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, was found in Wedge Pond. This bacteria can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals when they are consumed, inhaled or contact the skin. You can view the current levels and standards here.
This algae can starve marine plant and animal life of oxygen, cause humans and animals to get sick and damage of the nervous system and liver, according to the Mystic River Watershed Association.

The MyRWA's Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program measures the cyanobacteria levels in six recreational waterfronts and volunteers test samples weekly.
Wedge Pond was closed several times last summer because Escherichia coli or blue-green algae levels didn't meet the state standards.

"I don't think we will be able to reopen this season," Winn said.
The beach is located next to the Packer tennis courts on Palmer Street. The beach is normally open from late June to mid-August.
Winn said the beach was due to close in a week or two.
