A Literary Lunch for Seniors and McCall Students

McCall Library sponsored Literary Lunches bring generations together over good books.

McCall 6th grade students and Winchester senior citizens got together at the Jenks Center for their first “Literary Lunch” of the year. Librarian Jane Henchey and English teacher Beverly Daniel walked with the students from McCall over to Jenks, where tables, hot pizza and cold drinks were waiting. Then everyone sat down for a spirited discussion of the book The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick.

“It reminded me a little of Huckleberry Finn,” said one senior.

“It reminded me of The Diary of Anne Frank,” said a student.

Clearly, there was much to discuss. A work of historical fiction, the book takes place during the Civil War and it is narrated by a 12-year-old New England orphan boy, who runs off to find his older brother who has been forced to enlist in the Union Army. They end up caught in the middle of the Battle of Gettysburg. Everyone seemed to have liked Homer and wanted to share their impressions of him and his story.

These intergenerational Literary Lunches were started by former McCall Librarian Geri Driscoll. Geri had read the book and was at the Jenks lunch as well.

Reading is good for all ages!
