SYBS Early Season Action

Around the Horn from the early season action of the Sachem Youth Baseball and Softball League.

MAJORS

Season Opener, D-Backs vs. Red Sox
On what turned out to be a great night for a season opening game, the Pro-Care Diamondbacks beat the Union Gulf Service Red Sox 7-4 in a very evenly matched game.
Homeruns by Matthew Fuccillo, Patrick Costello and Ben Zamore sealed the win for the D-Backs along with solid pitching from Ben Rand, Costello, Zamore and Alex Caliguri.
The Red Sox had strong pitching performances from Nick Cantalupa, Ben Blackburn and Michael Yarin, along with some good hitting from Walter Thilly.
The kids all seemed happy to be back on the diamond and this game was a fun way to get the season off and running.
Dodgers win opener
The A. Scolaro Masonry Dodgers opened the 2011 season with a 6-0 win over the Cups and Cones Athletics Monday at Nutile field.
Both teams had excellent pitching as the game was 0-0 entering the 5th inning. Nate Ruffle-Degnan and Jeff Price each threw 2 innings of shutout ball and limited the Dodgers to just 1 hit through 4 innings. The Dodger pitchers were equally as tough as Zach Geddes and Tanner Cohen pitched 2 innings each, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 8.
The Dodgers broke through in the 5th, scoring 6 runs. Liam Fitzpatrick reached on an error, Cohen (2 hits)singled. Tyler Dagle singled scoring Fitzpatrick, and Jake Masucci followed with a single scoring Cohen. Sam Connon delivered a run scoring single, and with 2 out Andrew Torrey doubled home 2 more runs.
Liam Fitzpatrick pitched the final 2 innings for the Dodgers striking out the last 4 batters he faced for the win.
Cardinals Drop Fish in Opener
The Beacon Grille Cardinals banged out 7 hits and struck out 12 batters to sink the Fitness Together Marlins 5-2 in the season opener on Tuesday night. Paced by Preston Burbine (3 IP, 8 K's)and Mario DiBenedetto (3 IP, 3 K's), the Cardinals pitchers refused to let the Marlins start a rally. Offensively, the Cards were led by Burbine (1 H, 1 R, 3 RBI), Adam Ziady (2 doubles, 2 runs), and Harry Colvin (1 H, 1 R), and they received timely contributions from Henry Sergenian (1 R), Paul Kuechler (triple), Max Ehrbar (1 H), and DiBenedetto (1 H). The Marlins pushed across a run in the 4th when Cade Nagahama walked and scored, but DiBenedetto closed the door on a rally, striking out Jake Ewing to end the inning. Jacob Heart (2 H, 1 R) had 2 sharp singles for the Marlins, and the pitching of Henry McDonough, Antonio Andreozzi, and Robby Walsh prevented the Cards from a big inning. Shane Gindel's leaping snare of a Walsh liner in the 6th stranded Robbie Falso on third base and preserved the victory for the Cards.
White Sox Outlast Orioles 3-0
The Constellation Financial White Sox opened the season with an exciting 3-0 win against the Lexington Wealth Management Orioles. Sox hurlers Richie Toelke (3 IP, 4Ks), Ben Skinner (2 IP, 2Ks), and Jack Fair (1 IP, 1K) combined efforts to earn the shutout.
Orioles' starter Patrick Lampert (3 IP, 6Ks) and Toelke dominated from the mound for 3 innings. Sox 1B Chris Wilson singled to CF for the only hit off Lampert. The Orioles rallied to load the bases in the 3rd when Ryan Delaney and Andrew Woolston walked and Zach Tucci reached on an error. But Toelke pitched out of the jam.
In the 4th, the Birds' Drew Carbone reached on an error and Devon Marrocco walked. But Skinner induced two ground outs to retire the side. In the 5th, the Orioles loaded the bases again on walks to Ryan Mahoney and Jack Keane, and an error that put Delaney on 1st. But Skinner notched a strikeout and a ground out to close the door.
The Sox finally rallied in the home 5th, as Fair and Sk! inner reached on infield singles. Miguel Reid-Sandoval then drove a triple to deep RF that scored 2 runs. Reid-Sandoval then scored on an errant throw to push the lead to 3.
The Orioles did not go quietly in the 6th, as Eamon Mahoney reached on an error and Carbone singled to RF. But Fair notched the save, including an assist on a come-backer to end the game. On defense, Sox CF Timmy Albert and 2B Sam Toelke both made solid defensive plays to help preserve the win.
Dodgers defeat Marlins
The A. Scolaro Masonry Dodgers improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 7-2 victory over the Fitness Together Marlins. The Dodgers had solid pitching for the second straight game. Tanner Cohen (2 IP, 5k's), Andrew Torrey (3 IP, 6 K's) and Tyler Daigle threw a combined one hitter. Jacob Heart, Robbie Falso and Chris Kingston pitched well for the Marlins.
The Dodgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Philip Marks walked to lead off the game and scored on a Zach Geddes double. Geddes scored on a single by Cohen. Joe Lepore doubled scoring Cohen. In the 3rd the Dodgers added 4 more as Marks, Torrey, Geddes (rbi single) and Matt Scolaro (2 rbi triple) scored the runs.

Orioles Defeat Cardinals 2-1
The Lexington Wealth Management Orioles defeated the Beacon Grille Cardinals 2-1 in a well-played close game on Thursday night.  ON the mound for the Orioles were Drew Carbone and Sam Reuter, who each pitched 2 shutout innings.  Jack Keane came in during the 5th and 6th innings and allowed only 1 run on 2 hits.   The Cardinals also had excellent pitching performances by Jake Cohen, Adam Ziady, Henry Sergenian, and Harry Colvin.  The Orioles’ 2 runs came off the strong bats of Josh Reuter and Ryan Delaney, who each had an RBI in the 6th inning.   The Cards threatened in the bottom of the 6th, but their hopes were extinguished by 2 fine defensive plays by Devin Marrocco.  The Cards’ lone run came off of the hot bat of Drew DiBenedetto, who ripped an RBI double to deep left field to score Shane Gindel in the 6th inning.

White Sox Shut Out Red Sox 4-0
The Constellation Financial White Sox recorded their second consecutive shutout with a hard-earned 4-0 win against the Union Gulf Service Red Sox on a warm evening at Nutile Field.
White Sox pitchers Jack Fair (3 IP, 4Ks), Worthy Rae (2 IP, 3 Ks), and Ben Skinner (1 IP, 2Ks) combined to hold the Red Sox to 5 singles and allowed only one runner to reach 3rd base. Skinner also had 3 RBIs to pace the offense.
The Pale Hose jumped out to an early lead in the home 1st when Skinner singled to score Fair and Richie Toelke (single). The White Sox scored 2 more in the 4th when Aiden Steckel doubled, Toelke tripled (RBI), and Skinner grounded into a fielders' choice (RBI).
On offense for the Red Sox, Ben Blackburn, Nick Cantalupa (2 hits), Michael Yarin, and Andrew Sisitzky each had hits. The White Sox' Sam Toelke smacked his first hit in the majors with a solid single to RF in the 5th.
For the Red Sox, Blackburn (2 IP, 2Ks), Yarin (2 IP, 1 K), and Cantalupa (1 IP! , 2Ks) pitched well. The Red Sox' Sean Lucey made an outstanding catch on a line drive off the bat of Patrick Grassey to prevent a rally. White Sox OFs Luke Mix, Tim Albert, and Miguel Reid-Sandoval also played solid defense.
A's Get Win 5-2 Over Diamondbacks
The Cups and Cones A’s got off to a quick start against the ProCare Diamondbacks scoring 3 runs in their half of the first inning with a series of hits by Teddy Locke, Ramsey Sullivan, Nate Ruffle-Deignan and Justin Miranda. Then the pitching took over for the next 3 innings with Ben Rand and Pat Costello combining to strike out the next 5 of the next 6 batters for the Diamondbacks and Teddy Locke pitching for the A’s striking out the side in the second. Defense took over for the A’s with Andrew Holland making a great catch on a hit headed for the gap at second base in the third and Tyler Alba making a tremendous catch on the warning track in center field. The Diamondbacks Cordiero scored in the 4th and Ben Zamore scored in the 5th with the A’s answering back with two scored by Locke and Sullivan on hits by Holland and Ruffle-Deignan. Also getting hits for the A’s were Spencer Scully and Nate Johnston. Nate Ruffle-Deignan came in to pitch the last two innings keeping the Di! amondbacks at bay for the A’s victory 5-2.
Cards Nip DBacks in Thriller
Backed by the strong pitching of Preston Burbine (3 IP, 2H, 1 R, 4K) and Mario DiBennedetto (3 IP, 4K), the Beacon Grille Cardinals edged the Pro-Care Diamondbacks 9-8 on Sunday afternoon. The Cards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Henry Sergenian, Jake Cohen, and Burbine scored on RBIs by DiBenedetto and Paul Kuechler. Brennan Clarke of the DBacks walked and scored to cut the lead to 3-1, but Burbine surrended nothing more thanks to a tremendous double play (Harry Colvin to Sergenian to Adam Ziady) that cut down a DBack trying to tag up on a deep fly to center field. The Cards tacked on 3 more runs in the 3rd inning when Colvin, Burbine, and Cohen crossed the plate after a series of stolen bases. Max Ehrbar and Shane Gindel added solid hits as well. Ben Rand, Patrick Costello, Matt Fuccillo, and Ben Zamore pitched well for the DBacks, and Kyle Roche (3 hits, 1 run), Clarke (triple, 2 runs), Fuccillo (triple, 2 RBIs), and Rand (two homeruns, including a titanic blast over the high fence in right field) paced the offense. The DBacks' 6-run sixth tied the score at 8, but the Cardinals pushed across one more run in the 6th, as Kuechler reached on a fielder's choice and sped around the bases to score the clincher.

Red Sox Open With Big Win
The Lexington Wealth Management Red Sox opened the season with a big offensive outburst to top the Gloria's Pizza Rays, 15-4.The Sox jumped out to a quick lead as Jack Carpini smacked a 2-run double in the top of the first,scoring Alex Boswell and John Reid.After Sox starter Danny Gans cruised through a 1-2-3 first inning,the Sox added 7 runs in the second as Justin Krayer(2-3) singled in Matt Donovan(2-3). Also scoring was Michael Wade (2 RBI), Peter Wade and Luke Gilgun.Gans knocked in the final 2 runs with a 2-out double to make it 9-0.The Rays were not about to give up and started chipping away at the Sox lead,scoring 2 in the second and adding 2 more in the third as Charles Nowell belted a round-tripper and Nick Arana, Matt Fagan and Jameson Lehrer all scored.The Sox turned the ball over to lefty John Reid who set down 6 Rays in a row with 3 K's.The Sox added to their lead when slugging Christian Morris blasted a bases-clearing triple to right,knocking in Steven Morr! is,Gilgun and Krayer.After reliever Jameson Lehrer held the Sox scoreless in the sixth,the Rays attempted another rally led by Chloe O'Callahan's basehit, but fireballing closer Ian Kennedy shut the door by fanning 5 Rays in the final 2 innings.
AAA Phillies open season with win
The Extra Innings Phillies opened the 2011 season with a 14-5 win over the Prime BUCHHOLZ White Sox. Phillies pitchers Tyler Wolfe, John Laghetto and Tony Fiorentino combined to strike out 13 while holding the Sox to 5 runs on 5 hits. At the plate, the attack was led by Scott Ferreira who drove in 4 runs. Noah Lazarus & Gianluca Maffei went deep while Drew Armstrong & Justin Blundell chipped in with base clearing triples. Lilly Armstrong, Nick Corby (2) & Collin Kimball each singled. All 14 Phillies reached base as Emma Chasse and Gus Kraft battled White Sox pitching to earn hard fought walks. Next up the Phillies will be tested with a stretch of 4 games in five days.
Cubs rally to tie Athletics 7-7
The Joe's Main Street Pizza Cubs rallied for two runs in the fifth and 4 runs in the sixth to earn the tie with the Northeast Wireless Athletics.
Tyler Johnson had 14 strikeouts and pitched a complete game for the Cubs.
The cubs offense was led by Christopher Nicholas (two hits) and Johnson (two rbi). The Cubs sixth inning rally was furious as James Downs cleared the bases with a single and an error on the play. Scott Downs drove in his brother with another single. The game ended with a strikeout by Athletics Peter Kelly with the Cubs leaving the winning run stranded at third.
Teddy Lang and Peter Kelly pitched three innings for the Athletics. Lang had a big triple in the sixth inning to give the A's a 7-3 lead before the late surge by the Cubs ended the game in a 7-7 tie.
Cubs win close one 9-7 against White Sox.
The Joe's Main Street Pizza Cubs held off the Prime BUCHHOLZ White Sox 9-7. Wills D'Angelo pitched four strong innings to earn the win for the Cubs.
The Cubs offensive attack was led by James Downs with two singles and a double and scored three runs. Key hits by Christopher Nicholas, Joe Clark and D'Angelo helped the Cubs in key spots.
The White Sox got good pitching efforts from Christopher DeCaro and Joe Mccarron. Helping the White Sox with big hits were Cason Stone and Mccarron.
James Downs pitched the sixth inning to stop a late rally by the Sox.
Cubs defeat Diamondbacks 19-6.
The Joe's Main Street Pizza Cubs scored seven runs in the second and sixth innings to help defeat the Lawnicki Dental Care Diamondbacks 19-6. Nick Forcione pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Cubs.
The Cubs offense was led by Wills D'Angelo, Shane Fell, Michael Thorpe and Forcione, who each scored three runs. James Downs, Christopher Nicholas, Tyler Johnson and Henry Cassidy contributed key hits for the Cubs. The Cubs got great efforts from Jonah Salgat and Danny Gattineri.
The Diamondbacks were led by Lucas Gebolys, who scored two runs. Robert Costales pitched five innings of relief for the Dbacks.
John Everett hit a deep drive in the sixth inning and may have had extra bases until Downs made a great catch and threw to second base to end the game on a double play.

Giants Top Red Sox
The Ambrose Photography Giants defeated the Prime BUCHHOLZ Red Sox by a score of 13-3. Jack Houle led the Giants offense with two grand slams. behind the combined pitching of Jack Houle and Owen Sullivan, the Giants managed to shut down the Sox. In the fifth inning, Philip Walton drove in three runs on a bases loaded triple. Giants Reliever Colin Trueman stopped the Red Sox's fifth inning rally, and the Ambrose Photography Giants walked away with a win.
