Winchester High School Ranks 29th in State

U.S. News released the fourth edition of to high schools in America.

  US News released its fourth edition of top high schools in America, ranking Winchester High School at 538 among nearly 22,000 public schools. The publication lists Winchester as 29th among 351 Massachusetts high schools. According to the report, schools were ranked by how well they prepare students for college success. “US News partnered with the Washington, DC-based American Institutes for Research, which implemented US News's rankings methodology,” read the report. “US News determines the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work by analyzing student success in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs, both of which include college-level courses.” Statistics listed include student-teacher ratios…

Bittarelli Family Donates Books in Memory of Son Christian

Family makes annual book donation in his name to St. Mary's School students.

  St. Mary’s School second grade students are enjoying some of the books donated by the Bittarelli Family in memory of their son and brother Christian who passed away as a young father. Christian is remembered fondly by his family who continue their generous annual donation of books in his name.  Mrs. Bittarelli is a manager at Book Ends in Winchester.

Redistricting Advisory Committee Prepares Options for Elementary School Boundaries

The RAC will present its decisions to the School Committee on May 22

  The Winchester Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) is preparing options for redistricting maps for the elementary school attendance boundaries for the 2013-2014 academic year. The RAC has a deadline to present its recommendations to the School Committee on May 22, and the School Committee is hoping to vote on a final model by June. The redistricting will be implemented in September 2013. “We don't know yet (how many children will be affected). It will depend on which plan is ultimately adopted. Although in reality every student in the district will be affected, even if a child isn't moved to another school, they may have friends who move,” School Committee Member Sarah Girotti said.   “Currently, the four elementary schools in town …

Winchester's Thomas Pinella Shares in Two Prizes at Robotic Competition

Boston College High School sophomore, helps team to a two-fold victory.

  Thomas Pinella of Winchester, a sophomore at Boston College High School, helped his BC High Robotics team to a two-fold victory at the Boston FIRST* Regional Robotics Competition at Boston University, Agganis Arena on March 23 and 24. Tom and 14 other members of the BC High‘s newly-formed Robotics team, under the guidance of Mr. Mark Pumphrey of Rockland, faculty moderator, worked the entire year with the help of engineers and parents, to mechanically design, build, wire, and program their prized robot, ROOK. The robot was named The ROOK because, like a rook on a chess board, it can move sideways due to the swerve drive.  The team burned the midnight oil in preparation for the competition. Vinson Owen Students Take the Stage at Annual 'VO on Stage' Event

Student performers show off their talents for third annual event.

  On Thursday April 12, students and parents of Vinson-Owen attended the third annual “VO on Stage” talent show. After introductions by Principal Smith, dedicated parent directors Paul Bohne and Vanitha Raghavan led the fifth grade student MC’s Annie Abate, Stella Psiakis, Mackayla Wiseman and Lilly Armstrong in starting the show.  The night began with the gymnastic moves of secod graders Catherine Armstrong, Molly Ciampa and Madelyn Dengler. Their twists and turns set the upbeat tone for the evening.  Kindergartener Christi McGaffigan showed off her dance moves and moxie while dancing and lip synching solo on the High School’s auditorium stage. Authorfest Brings Authors and Illustrators to the Classroom

Authors and illustrators visit Winchester students to share their passion.

  More than 20 authors and illustrators visited with and presented their works to students of every grade at each school in Winchester last Thursday. Each author or illustrator spoke about what drives them to write or draw, as well as the importance of pursuing creativity and inspiration.  “This is something that is so uniquely Winchester,” Caren Connelly of the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) said. “WFEE raises $7,500 a year for Authorfest. An author in every classroom to inspire the kids is something that we can truly support.” At Lynch Elementary School, Heather Panahi spoke to kindergarten and pre-k classrooms about her book, “The Bebop Express.” The story follows musicians through all of the notorious jazz …

Sounds like a fantastic event. With school resources dwindling across the country, so many of these worthwhile programs get cut. It's a shame, too. You can't put a price on inspiration. With federal law and funding so closely connected to standardized testing, I fear schools are teaching to a very shallow pool of memorized facts. Preview: Authorfest Brings Authors, Illustrators to Winchester

More than 20 well-known authors to visit three area schools.

  On Thursday, April 12, more than 20 nationally recognized authors and illustrators will visit classrooms in all public elementary schools, St. Mary’s School, McCall Middle School and Winchester High School to celebrate Authorfest. Authorfest is a tradition that began more than a decade ago, founded by librarians and volunteers hoping to strengthen children’s love of reading. The goal of the program is to introduce children to authors who will instruct and inspire them. Authors visit every grade level and talk to students about how they write or illustrate and what skills are needed to publish a book. Children get to interact with the authors in a personal way that may translate to a greater interest in books and a love of reading. Parent…

A Pop Warner All-American Scholar ranks academically in the top 2 percent of approximately 400,000 children that take part in Pop Warner Little Scholars’ spirit and football programs nationwide. Students, Officials Break Ground for New Vinson-Owen Elementary School

Students, Faculty and Town Members Celebrate the Rebuilding of the Vinson-Owen Elementary School

  On Tuesday morning, kindergarten through fifth grade students at the Vinson-Owen Elementary School filed in to take their seats on mats laid out in front of an unearthed hill while the student band played “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Parents, teachers and town members watched at the groundbreaking ceremony for the rebuilding of Vinson-Owen Elementary School. Students Invited to a Star Party at McCall Middle School

Experts will help students study the night sky.

  McCall Middle School science teachers have teamed up with Rob Naeye, Editor and Chief of Sky & Telescope Magazine, Alan Mac Roberts editor of Sky & Telescope and contributor to the Boston Globe and Tony Flanders, Host of PBS’s SkyWeek to host a Star Party on Manchester Field on April 2 or April 3 if there are too many clouds. At dusk, students, teachers and their knowledgeable guests will gather around several telescopes to gaze upon the night sky.  The science teachers expressed an interest in providing an astronomy workshop for the students, according to Joel Toner, a Winchester parent and manager of several publications at New Tack Media. “We worked together to put together a ‘star party’ for the students.
