The RAC will present its decisions to the School Committee on May 22
The Winchester Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) is preparing options for redistricting maps for the elementary school attendance boundaries for the 2013-2014 academic year. The RAC has a deadline to present its recommendations to the School Committee on May 22, and the School Committee is hoping to vote on a final model by June. The redistricting will be implemented in September 2013. “We don't know yet (how many children will be affected). It will depend on which plan is ultimately adopted. Although in reality every student in the district will be affected, even if a child isn't moved to another school, they may have friends who move,” School Committee Member Sarah Girotti said. “Currently, the four elementary schools in town …

Thursday, April 19
Thomas Pinella of Winchester, a sophomore at Boston College High School, helped his BC High Robotics team to a two-fold victory at the Boston FIRST* Regional Robotics Competition at Boston University, Agganis Arena on March 23 and 24. Tom and 14 other members of the BC High‘s newly-formed Robotics team, under the guidance of Mr. Mark Pumphrey of Rockland, faculty moderator, worked the entire year with the help of engineers and parents, to mechanically design, build, wire, and program their prized robot, ROOK. The robot was named The ROOK because, like a rook on a chess board, it can move sideways due to the swerve drive. The team burned the midnight oil in preparation for the competition. They worked right up to the midnight deadline, …

Authors and illustrators visit Winchester students to share their passion.
More than 20 authors and illustrators visited with and presented their works to students of every grade at each school in Winchester last Thursday. Each author or illustrator spoke about what drives them to write or draw, as well as the importance of pursuing creativity and inspiration. “This is something that is so uniquely Winchester,” Caren Connelly of the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) said. “WFEE raises $7,500 a year for Authorfest. An author in every classroom to inspire the kids is something that we can truly support.” At Lynch Elementary School, Heather Panahi spoke to kindergarten and pre-k classrooms about her book, “The Bebop Express.” The story follows musicians through all of the notorious jazz …

More than 20 well-known authors to visit three area schools.
On Thursday, April 12, more than 20 nationally recognized authors and illustrators will visit classrooms in all public elementary schools, St. Mary’s School, McCall Middle School and Winchester High School to celebrate Authorfest. Authorfest is a tradition that began more than a decade ago, founded by librarians and volunteers hoping to strengthen children’s love of reading. The goal of the program is to introduce children to authors who will instruct and inspire them. Authors visit every grade level and talk to students about how they write or illustrate and what skills are needed to publish a book. Children get to interact with the authors in a personal way that may translate to a greater interest in books and a love of reading. Parent…
