Boston Marathon Issues Heat Advisory, Offers Deferment

Inexperienced marathoners are warned not to run on Monday.

Runners scheduled to run the Boston Marathon on Monday were advised to do so with caution. Because of the expected high temperatures of nearly 90 degrees on Monday, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) issued an email statement on Saturday morning which offered a deferment to any official runner who would like to postpone his or her participation until 2013. “This applies to official entrants only who either have claimed or will claim their bib number packet at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo through Sunday evening at the Seaport World Trade Center in South Boston,” the statement read. "Runners must claim their bib number for deferment to be an option.” The medical co-directors of the marathon, Dr. Pierre d’Hemecourt and Dr. Sophia…

Winchester Youth Teams Will Pay To Play

The Field Management Committee will be requesting an increase in participation fees to cover maintenance costs.

A section of Mullen Field needed to be closed off temporarily. Part of the field began to sink, making it unsafe for athletic teams to play on. And according to the Director of the Winchester Recreation Department, Chris Nelson, it’s a problem the town can’t afford to fix. With the struggling economy, playing fields are not high on a town’s to-do list. “The [Department of Public Works] found a solution to that problem [at Mullen Field], but to find the cause of it and fix that costs more money than we have,” said Nelson. The lack of funds is something the Field Management Committee is attempting to change. “We’re going to raise fees to supplement the maintenance costs,” Nelson said. He told the Board of Selectmen the committee would like …

"The Field began to sink"... Yes, that's because the field is a filled in wetland, and its origin is in violation of the wetlands act, whereby individuals OR towns cannot fill in wetlands... Doesn't anyone realize that filling wetlands is one of the major reason why the town floods so badly...???? There's no where for the water to go. AAHHH.   more ›

Winchester Moves Closer To Adding More Athletic Fields

The Winchester Soccer Club hopes to have more fields built in Winchester by the fall of 2013.

Winchester is another step closer to having more playing fields in town. The town has recently renovated Manchester Field, which includes a state-of-the-art turf field, and once Phase II of the renovation project is completed, which will build a brand new track and two more fields at McCall, there will be even more playing fields for Winchester athletic teams to compete on. But, if all goes according to plan, Winchester families may also have the Winchester Community Park. In December, the Winchester Soccer Club informed the Board of Selectmen that they have purchased and plan on developing two properties at 120 and 134 Cross Street – the Computer Fulfillment lot and the Marotta property – and turning them into playing fields. “More kids …

Former Winchester Wrestler Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Frank Fodera Jr. has a Winchester High School wrestling record in Mass. that has never been broken - 50-0 - and he’s being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The following was submitted by Sherry Alpert. It’s been a long wait for Frank Fodera, Jr. since 1997, when he became one of only five athletes in the history of Massachusetts high school wrestling to be voted “Outstanding Wrestler” not once, but twice. Fodera, Principal of East Coast Developments, Inc. of North Reading, will be inducted into the Massachusetts Interscholastic Wrestling Coaches Association (MIWCA) Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 p.m., Salem High School, just before the All-State finals. A 1997 graduate of Winchester High School, he was among seven athletes and five wrestling coaches inducted at the ceremony. “This honor is long overdue,” MIWCA Chair David Breen said.  “It’s a privilege to induct Frank Fodera, Jr. …

Red Sox to Hold Baseball Camp in Winchester

The Red Sox will be in town from July 16 - 20.

Pitchers and catchers aren't scheduled to report in Florida until Sunday, but it's never too early to start talking about the baseball season. And this summer Winchester could see some Red Sox players visiting town. The Sox recently announced the schedule for their second annual Red Sox Baseball Summer Camps that will begin in late June. One of those weeks, from July 16-20, the Red Sox Camp will be held at Winchester High School. “We feel this is an excellent opportunity to help the youth in the greater Boston area to learn and play the game we all love,” said Boston Red Sox President Larry Lucchino in a press release. Boston Red Sox Camps will provide area youth between the ages of 5 and 13 with on-field instruction and games beginning …

Winchester Resident Recalls First Beanpot

Sherman "Whip" Saltmarsh recorded an assist in the first tournament 60 years ago.

For over half a century Sherman “Whip” Saltmarsh has been in the stands cheering on his Boston College Eagles. And on Monday night, Saltmarsh will be there again, supporting his alma mater, as the Eagles’ hockey team takes the ice against Boston University. The Eagles will be attempting to win their 17th Beanpot hockey tournament. The tournament, which is celebrating its 60th year this season, pits four Boston-area hockey teams – Boston University, Boston College, Harvard University and Northeastern University – against one another in a round-robin tournament. Saltmarsh hasn’t missed a tournament yet. But it was that first one that the former Winchester State Rep. and long-time Winchester resident remembers. “It was real exciting,” …

Winchester Wrestlers Win Sectional Title

The Sachems are Division 2 champs.

The following was submitted by Winchester parent Phillip Stern. Winchester outscored perennial rival North Andover 247.5 to 238.5 to win the Division II North Sectional Championship on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Sachems last won the Sectional Tournament in 2008 and continued pinning their way to the Division III State Championship. Now the Sachems compete in the stronger Division II and are ranked No. 3 in the state behind Division I powers Methuen and Framingham. At the Sectionals, 13 out of 14 Sachem wrestlers ended up on the podium. Heavyweight Dan McGurl wrestled in the last match of the day but it was worth the wait as he ended up on the top of the podium as Sectional Champion. He won his first two matches by pin, but had to work the …
