Winchester Runner Reacts One Month After Marathon Bombing

Winchester resident Karina Chmielewski recalls how things have gone for her since the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15.

Since the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, Winchester resident Karina Chmielewski said the month that followed has been "a physical and emotional rollercoaster." Chmielewski, who was about a half-mile away from the finish line at the marathon when the explosions went off, said she will never forget what transpired that afternoon. "The last 30 days have been a physical and emotional rollercoster," she said. "What happened on April 15 forever changed my life, my family's and friends'. I am taking a break from running due to an injury, but as soon as I recover I will resume training for Boston Marathon 2014." Bay State Bike Week Begins

The week encouraging bike-based activities is May 11-19.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation along with several other public and private entities have banded together to tell you to get out of your cars and onto your bikes this week. May 11 to 19 is Bay State Bike Week, a week unique to Massachusetts which celebrates all things bicycle. Winchester residents are encourage to bike to work. There are bike-based events going on around the Bay State this week, and several in the Boston area. The Bay State Bike Week website has provided a searchable calendar to find dates, locations and times for events closest to you. Winchester runner Frank Fantasia finished his 11th consecutive Boston Marathon just a few minutes before bombs exploded near the finish line. Fantasia, 64, a Somerville native, completed his 13th Boston Marathon on Monday. Fantasia, who raised about $15,000 for Boston Children's Hospital, was one of roughly 200 runners on the "Miles for Miracles" team. Recalling the Race Fantasia said things started off well except for the fact that he ran too fast in the early stages of the marathon and "I knew I would pay the price in the hills which I did do." Winchester resident Karina Chmielewski was unable to complete the 2013 Boston Marathon due to the bombings, but that has not deterred her from planning to run it again next year. Chmielewski, 37, running in her first Boston Marathon, said the first five miles were strong and under her target before the pain set in, according to an email she sent out to her charity and supporters. Ten days before the marathon she suffered a hip injury, making it so she could no longer run comfortably without being seriously injured. "I decided to enjoy every mile I had left. Winchester resident Ann Olmsted completed her second Boston Marathon before the bombings Monday afternoon. "I ran the marathon (Monday) and finished before the blasts," Olmsted said. "I had already retrieved my bag from the bus and found my family when we heard the blasts. "We were blocks away so I didn't see anything but we heard the blasts very clearly and knew right away it wasn't good." Three people died and more than 100 injured when two bombs detonated near the finish line shortly before 3 p.m. Monday during the race.
