School Bus Laws You Might Not Know

School's almost back in session, but were you aware of these state laws on school buses?

Most Winchester students know the "Rules of the Bus," but here are a few Massachusetts' state laws about school buses you might not have known. No. 1. Everyone knows to stop when a school bus is loading and unloading passengers, but what you may not know is that if you don’t stop, you could get a ticket of up to $250. That fine can go up to $2,000 and a suspended license of up to a year for subsequent offenses (MGL 90-14) No. 2. Oh, speaking of stopping behind a stopped bus, even fire trucks, police cars and ambulances with their sirens on have to stop until the passengers have been loaded or unloaded. (MGL 89-7B) No. 3.  Tell your kids to sit down, because bus drivers can be fined up to $500 if they drive the bus when the kids aren’t …

Are Drugs/Alcohol a Problem at WHS?

New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought.

According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day. The study also said that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abuse drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on there campus where students reguarly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. And about 44 percent said they knew of…

Allene I think you are the one being naive. It's not just Winchester and it's NOT because of money. Yes, more money means easier access, but drugs in schools have been in ALL schools for MANY years. Thirty years ago, my national blue-ribbon, economically and ethnically diverse school had the same. Even goodies like me knew who took drugs, who dealt drugs, and where they were dealt. EVERYONE knew…   more ›

Town Seeks Input on Upgrading WHS

The Educational Facilities Planning and Building Committee will focus on Skillings Field, including both the fields and current high school location, as the location for a new or renovated high school.

As the school year quickly approaches, Winchester residents are being asked to offer input on updating Winchester High School. Winchester has been working with the Massachusetts School Building Authority on a feasibility study of the high school. This has included discussion of renovating the existing school or building a new school in another location. After reviewing 12 alternate sites, the Educational Facilities Planning and Building Committee voted in July to focus exclusively on Skillings Field, including both the fields and current high school location, as the location for a new or renovated high school. Bob Deering, chairman of the EFPBC, described the Skillings site at a June Selectmen meeting as a 16-acre area, with approximately …

Great. What is Winchester's unfunded pension liability again? My kitchen was last remodeled in the 1980s, but I don't have the cash on hand to do it now, so I am not going to.   more ›

Enough already, I agree with you! It seems to me that kids are already praised enough for every achievement. The kids that should be highlighted are the ones who do chores for others without complaining or those who do good deeds without expecting praise, not the ones who are being carted around to enrichment activities to round out their college resumes. It's a nice idea to have a column that …   more ›
