Selectmen Back 2012 World Series

The Board of Selectmen were thrilled Monday that the Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series is returning to town after a three-year hiatus.

Winchester has received the honor of hosting next summer’s Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series. Sachem Youth Baseball/Softball Association (SYBS) President Bob Nutile went to the Board of Selectmen with the news Monday night to seek their support, and he received it overwhelmingly. “It’s great news,” Selectman Thomas Howley said. “It was a wonderful event before; it was really great for the town.” Selectman Jim Johnson agreed. “I support it 100 percent,” he said. Winchester hosted the 2009 World Series at Robert J. Nutile Field, which will also be used for the games in 2012 from Aug. 7 to 16. Nutile said Cal Ripken officials wanted the event back in Winchester because of its success in 2009. The event features the best 12-year-old Cal Ripken …

This was a fabulous event in 2009--an incredible opportunity for the young athletes involved in the games, and a wonderful experience for youth and adults from all over the country as they met each other and supported these great kids. My family attended almost all the games, enjoyed every minute and were impressed with the good sportsmanship and high level of ability of all the teams. We'e so …   more ›

Sports Recap: Winchester Baseball Team Showed Improvement

Here's a look back at the Winchester baseball season.

After ending last season with a winning record (11-10), the Winchester baseball team had aspirations of challenging for a league title this year. The Sachems wound up losing their first four games and could never fully recover, but coach David Blanchard said it was still a good year. "From a record standpoint we were a little disappointed," Blanchard said. "Unfortunately we let a few games we all thought we could win slip through our fingers. But in the end we had good young men and coachable guys that made it an enjoyable season." After opening with losses to Medford, Reading, Stoneham and Lexington, Winchester (7-13) earned its first win with an 8-3 victory over Wakefield. That started the Sachems most successful run of the season as the…

Winchester Stays Alive in EMass Cal Ripken Tournament with 3-0 Win

The team, made up of 12-year-olds, shutout Tyngsborough Monday in Chelmsford.

Winchester staved off elimination once again Monday in the Eastern Massachusetts Cal Ripken Tournament in Chelmsford. The team, made up of 12-year-olds, worked out of a couple early-inning jams to defeat Tyngsborough 3-0 in the losers’ bracket and remain as one of the six teams left in contention. Winchester pitchers Pat Lampert, Richie Toelke and Pat Costello combined for the shutout, while second baseman Devin Morrocco had what would be the game-winning hit with an RBI single to center field in the top of the third inning. Right fielder Teddy Locke scored on Morrocco’s hit to break the scoreless tie. Then, in the top of the fourth inning, third baseman Preston Burbine belted a home run well over the 180-foot sign in center field to make …

Baseball Team Looks To Improve

The Sachems bring back their top pitcher and last year's league batting champ, as Winchester hopes to challenge for a league title.

Many baseball coaches believe that you build a team up the middle, which means positions like pitcher, catcher and shortstop are most important. So Winchester is in good position as it starts the 2011 season—the Sachems return staff ace Jed Robinson, all-star catcher Ratthapoom Asdornvuttikrai and Babson College-bound shortstop Luke Pashos. Robinson is a three-year starter who was a league all-star last season. A strong off-season has made the lefty even better and he's looking to leave an impression at Winchester before taking a prep year at Avon Old Farms. Asdornvuttikrai, another three-year player, is an exceptional hitter who led the Middlesex Leauge with a .491 average last season. The Clark-bound senior can hit for power and average …

Youth Program Begins Scholarship Fund

The Sachem Youth Baseball and Softball Program will be offering a $1,000 scholarship to high school students.

The Sachem Youth Baseball/Softball Association has announced that it will be awarding $1,000 scholarships annually to two graduating high school seniors who live in Winchester. While SYBS has been heavily involved in improving the fields around Winchester, the Board of Directors decided it wanted to give back to the community in a different way, and came up with the idea of awarding scholarships. "I'm not sure how many youth programs have a scholarship program, so we’re excited about it," said SYBS Executive VP Rich Michienzi, who was a driving force behind the new initiative. "It's something I’ve had in the back of my mind for a couple of years now." The SYBS Scholarship Fund was established by its Board of Directors this past November. "…
