It was the first time a team from Winchester competed in the event.
During the week of Feb. 29 and March 3 the March Madness Basketball tournament was held with teams participating from around the region. For the first time ever, Winchester had a fifth grade girls' team participate in the event and they played against much more experienced traveling teams. They went 1-2 in the tournament. These girls participated in the Winchester Basketball Association town league for 5th grade girls and were selected by their peers to be on the March Madness team.

The Sachems defeated Watertown 58-45.
The Raiders came out of the locker room and played like last year's state finalists, but after the first quarter Winchester dominated the boards and stopped Watertown's top scorer, Patrick McHugh, on the way to a 58-45 win for the visitors. Senior captain McHugh scored 9 of the Raiders' 11 first quarter points, and Watertown led by three after one period. He scored four more early in the second, but the Sachems battled back to end the half on a 12-2 run, giving Winchester a 21-17 lead at the half. Senior Craig Fitzgerald capped the first half for Winchester by hitting a two pointer and drained the free throw after being fouled on the shot. Here's a look back at the boys and girls basketball seasons.
The girls and boys basketball teams at Winchester both qualified for the playoffs and finished with winning records, but the roads they took to get there couldn't have been more different. While the boys team was consistently around the .500 mark, the girls team experienced some wild swings. Here is a recap of their seasons: Girls basketball: After losing four games to start the season, Winchester went on a six-game winning streak, another four-game losing streak, then a five-game winning streak.
