Former Secretary of State Visits Winchester

Madeleine Albright visited Winchester Friday night to talk about her new book and hold an informal conversation about U.S. and world politics.

  Sponsored by the Winchester High School's Connect and Commit campaign that advocates community service learning and addressing larger social needs outside the classroom, and in partnership with Bookends, the former, first female Secretary of State, Director on the Board of Foreign Relations, U.S. Ambassador to the UN and current college Professor at Georgetown University, Dr. Madeleine Albright visited the Town Hall Friday night at 7 p.m. to talk shop and her new book, "Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War 1836-1948."  This marks Albright's second tour through Winchester, the first coming on the heels over her 2009 book, "Read My Pins." “I feel very much at home in Winchester,” she related. Relay for Life Coming to Winchester

Connect and Commit and the Winchester Youth Center will be hosting the event.

Winchester High School's service program, Connect and Commit, will be giving residents of town another opportunity to give back to the community. The organization, along with the Winchester Youth Center, will be holding a Relay for Life from 6 p.m., Saturday, June 16 to 6 a.m., Sunday June 17 at Skillings Field. Students from both organizations have partnered with the American Cancer Society to create the first Annual Relay for Life of Winchester. According to the organization, “Relay for Life is the signature fundraising activity of the American Cancer Society.” The Youth Center and Connect and Commit said their goal is to “bring the community members of all ages together to raise money for the American Cancer Society, raise awareness of …

Winchester Students Travel to Ecuador for Service, Adventure and More

WHS students traveled to South America commiting to community service, connecting with people there and with each other.

Although trekking in Ecuador sounds like an exotic adventure on the travel channel it was the real life experience of 16 Winchester High School students from July 1-23. As members of the school-based group Connect and Commit, students traveled with their advisor Kristen Ritchie through arrangments made by World Challenge Expeditions, a Boston branch of a United Kingdom agency. "The program is entering its fourth year," explained Ritchie. "My position as program coordinator is funded through the private non-profit organization, the Winchester Community Service Foundatation."
