- LOCAL CONNECTIONS

Tuesday, August 21, 2012
“I don’t think American taxpayers should be footing the bill for people’s pie purchases,” Andrea Taber, proprietor of the Ever So Humble Pie Co. in Walpole, told bostonherald.com. Taber sells her pies at a neighboring farmers market, yet refuses to accept tokens that the Farmers Market organizers sell to Electronic Benfits Transfer or EBT cardholders to use at the market. Farmers Market chairwoman Donna Ingemanson said that people on food stamps needed healthy choices and asked the Boston Herald, "What better chance to buy healthy foods than at a farmers market?" Should food vendors be able to decide who they sell their products to? Do you think that farmers markets should sell tokens to EBT cardholders? Let us know what you think in the …

The indoor market will take place in the greenhouse beginning Saturday, Jan. 14.
The days are shorter, the weather is colder and the outdoor activities are few and far between. But this year, Mahoney’s Garden Center in Winchester is trying to change that. Beginning Jan. 14 and running to March 17, Mahoney’s will be hosting an indoor farmers market at its Winchester location. The event, similar to the Winchester Farmers Market, will run every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We would get over 1,000 people every Saturday at our Falmouth location,” said Pamela Vasques, Mahoney’s Corporate Event Planner. “We decided to expand the market. It’s a great social event.” The market will take place in the greenhouse and will have a lot of familiar faces. “We offered everyone who has a table at the [Winchester] farmers market to …

Next week's farmers market will raise money for Massachusetts farmers impacted by Hurricane Irene.
The following was submitted by the Winchester Farmers Market. Corn has become a scarce commodity. Over the first three years of the Winchester Farmers Market, come October, Ed Silvia of E.L. Silvia Farm, donates a couple bushels of corn each week so that the farmers market can roast them and freely hand them out to market customers on Saturday mornings. It was a way the farmers market expressed their gratitude to their customers. This year, though, the corn roast is not occurring. Weather-wise, 2011 had been a difficult year for many farmers. And once Hurricane Irene hit, the difficulties increased exponentially. Flats Mentor Farm stopped coming to the market entirely—their field was completely flooded out. And the selection of produce at …

Shameful. All people should be encouraged and be able to to buy a variety of foods for their families. Healthy eating can and should include occasional treats as well, especially if they are freshly made and unprocessed. To shame a person in a public setting is outrageous, and smacks of a type of judgmental elitism that is truly out of control.   more ›
