Sherman "Whip" Saltmarsh recorded an assist in the first tournament 60 years ago.
For over half a century Sherman “Whip” Saltmarsh has been in the stands cheering on his Boston College Eagles. And on Monday night, Saltmarsh will be there again, supporting his alma mater, as the Eagles’ hockey team takes the ice against Boston University. The Eagles will be attempting to win their 17th Beanpot hockey tournament. The tournament, which is celebrating its 60th year this season, pits four Boston-area hockey teams – Boston University, Boston College, Harvard University and Northeastern University – against one another in a round-robin tournament. Saltmarsh hasn’t missed a tournament yet. But it was that first one that the former Winchester State Rep. and long-time Winchester resident remembers. “It was real exciting,” …

Both the boys and girls hockey teams had successful seasons, but failed to meet last year's accomplishments.
The boys hockey team was coming off two straight appearances in the Super 8 tournament and the girls hockey team had just won the 2010 MIAA Girls Division II state championship. Not surprisingly, neither team reached such heights this season, but there were still some great moments — Michaela Chiuccariello became the girls program's all-time leading scorer, while the boys team advanced farther than any other Winchester team this winter, reaching the semifinals of the Division 1 North tournament. Here's a look back at both seasons: Boys hockey: The Sachems needed to replace two-time Middlesex League MVP Mike Seward and three-year starting goalie Mike Messuri. Senior Jed Robison did an admirable job between the pipes, while Seward's …
