Winchester Police and Other Local Departments Delivering Letters to Boy With Cancer

More than 40 police departments left the Burlington Mall Wednesday morning to deliver cards to 6-year-old Nathan Norman in Rustburg, Va.

The only thing on Dawn Norman's wish list this holiday season is that her 6-year old son Nathan lives to see another Christmas, and that his wish of receiving cards, letters and patches from as many police officers, firefighters and EMTs is fulfilled. Why? Because police officers, firefighters and EMTs happen to be Nathan's heroes. As reported on New Milford Patch, three years ago, Nathan, who lives with his family in Rustburg, Va., was diagnosed with brain cancer. "I remember the doctor saying that there was an abnormality," Dawn Norman remembers. "The doctor kept telling me over and over that there was an abnormality and then it hit me. He was telling me that my son had cancer." Like most little boys, Nathan loves to watch police …

This shows, once again, how special, caring and commited our Police and emergency responders are. The highlights on the news last night brought tears to my eyes. We are all proud of our police. Will keep Nathan and his family in our hearts.   more ›

The lighting begins at 7 p.m.

Winchester’s annual Holiday Lighting ceremony gets underway at 7 p.m. tonight. Along with the lighting, there will be carolers and Santa’s arrival, all on the Winchester Commons. It should be mostly clear tonight, but bundle up, as the overnight low is expected to be in the mid 20s, according to the National Weather Service. The menu includes the church’s baked beans recipe, hot dogs, homemade coleslaw, brown bread, corn bread and pies, along with apple cider, milk and decaf coffee. The dinner is $8 for adults, $5 for children under 10 and free for children under 5. Proceeds will be split between the Woburn Council of Social Concern and the church’s Youth …

What's Your Favorite Christmas Song?

Christmas tunes are on the airwaves: tell us which songs get you into the holiday spirit by posting a comment below.

Whether you love it (like I do), hate it (like Scrooge pre-transformation) or merely accept it as an unavoidable component of the holiday season, we at Patch want to hear your thoughts on Christmas music.  What's on your Christmas playlist? Does Wham's, "Last Christmas," make you break out in song and dance? Do you serenade your special someone with Mariah Carey's, "All I Want for Christmas is You?" Does The Pretenders', "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" get you into the holiday spirit? Artists have been releasing Christmas albums in recent months: Blake Shelton's Cheers, It's Christmas, has been on my iPod this week. What's your favorite Christmas song? Let us know by posting a comment below.

"I'll Be Home For Christmas." Winchester will always be my home and even if I can't be there in a physical sense, I am in spirit. Every time I hear that song, I think of Winchester, the old Christmas memories and the the people who were with us there. Merry Christmas everyone! :)   more ›
