What's Open on Labor Day in Winchester

Find out what's open and closed in Winchester on Labor Day.

As Labor Day unofficially marks the last day of summer (it's actually Sep. 21), many businesses and companies around town celebrate the day by trying to go away one last time or have one more barbecue. The summer is also winding down for Winchester students who will start their school year this Wednesday. Even though Labor Day is a national holiday, that doesn't mean everything in Winchester is closed, but if you plan on heading into the town center, here's some advice: Closed: All town, federal, state and county offices, banks, the post office, the Winchester Public Library, the Recreation Center and the Jenks Center. There will also be no mail delivery today. Open: Supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, convenience stores and retail …

Photos From the 'Labor Day' Set

Add your own photos from the movie set in Winchester.

Here are a few photos from the set of the upcoming movie "Labor Day". The crew was setup at a house on Cabot Street in The Flats. Winchester High School was used as the base camp for the crew, extras and trucks. Boston Casting Inc. called for more classic vehicles from the '70s and '80s from locals Monday afternoon to be used in today's shooting. "Labor Day", directed by Jason Reitman, focuses on depressed single mom Adele and her son Henry, who offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride, according to IMDb. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited. If you were able to see the set, feel free to add your own photos to the slideshow.

Hollywood Seeks Classic Cars

The upcoming movie "Labor Day" is being shot in Winchester on Tuesday and needs classic cars for the scene.

Do you have a classic car just sitting in your garage? Well, now you have a chance to show it off for Hollywood and make some cash, too. Boston Casting Inc. is searching for '70s and '80s cars for the "Labor Day" movie shoot at Winchester High School Tuesday afternoon. The shoot starts at 2 p.m., according to a Boston Casting news release. The shoot is expected to last for six to eight hours, but drivers should be prepared for a full 12-hour day. "People will work as extras with their cars," the release said. "The cars will likely be used as props parked on the street." Extras will be paid $64 for eight hours plus an additional $20 for the car. The upcoming movie "Labor Day," starring Josh Brolin, Kate Winslet and Tobey Maguire, has been …

Heard about this last night. The friend that told me,was so excited, thinking all the film's principals would be hanging out on Salisbury waiting to greet those who arrived on the scene. It don't work that way. Having been a resident of other locales popular as film backdrops, the glamour goes down the storm drain, when some overzealous A.D.,holds your home prisoner-w/you in it. Or worse,w/you …   more ›

Green Tips: An 'Eco-Correct' Labor Day Cookout

This Labor Day, think green and have an eco-correct cookout. It's really not that hard.

How can you have an eco-correct cookout this Labor Day? It's easy. First, visit your local farmers' market for fresh local fruits and vegetables, which are so abundant this time of year.   Then, a charcoal chimney is an easy way to start your grill and much safer than lighter fluid if you don’t have a gas grill. Make sure you use natural, hardwood charcoal instead of the conventional briquettes.  Fill at least half your grill with produce.  Produce is not only healthy and low calorie, but also doesn’t produce the carcinogens that can form on grilled meats.  Always cook over a low-to-medium flame and avoid over-charring.  Flare-ups and smoking oil create carcinogens.  Marinating or basting with oil, honey or a barbeque sauce will provide a …
