Next Door Is a Place for More Than Just Theater

The Next Door Center for the Arts is about to launch its latest production, "Into the Woods," but staff say the center is about more than theater.

The Next Door Center for the Arts is currently in the midst of “tech week” as it prepares to mount its latest production, “Into the Woods.” This week of technical rehearsals brings together all the elements of the show, ultimately culminating in opening night this Friday. The show tells the tale of a baker and his wife, who have been cursed by an evil enchantress, leaving them unable to have children. The couple embarks on a journey to break the spell, and on the way they meet a variety of fairy tale characters. “This is a musical that will delight our children yet still holds a very deep message for adults in the audience. While there are fairy tale characters in this play, they are adults with recognizable moral dilemmas,” said Brian …

Swizzles Frozen Yogurt Becomes Largest in New England

The Winchester shop is the largest self-serve frozen yogurt chain in the region.

Swizzles Frozen Yogurt has quickly become the largest self-serve frozen yogurt chain in New England with the help of its Winchester shop, according to the News Times. Swizzles is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop, where customers can choose from a rotating selection of frozen yogurt flavors, then add their own toppings. New York resident and CEO Adam Kessner said they rotate through about 25 flavors, with 10 on tap at any given time, including six standards that don’t change. “Living in New York and seeing first-hand the popularity of self-serve frozen yogurt shops, I saw an opportunity in New England to fill this void," Kessner told the Times. "I have chosen specific towns within Southern Connecticut and the Boston, Massachusetts regions …

Cups and Cones really needs to "up their game" if they would like to stay relevant and compete with the new Swizzles. After multiple visits to Cups n' Cones, I have found the service mediocre and the interior pretty worn out. Swizzles feels like a special occasion, where Cups n' Cones does not. I hope they improve their service and interior, otherwise I think Cups n' Cones may be headed towards …   more ›

Yoga Mandala Prepares Move to New Space

Yoga Mandala's new space will be shared with a new business, Core Elements, owned by Beth Maher, who has long taught at Yoga Mandala.

After 10 years in its current location, Yoga Mandala is about to move to a new site at 750 Main St. Owner Nicole Grant wasn’t actively looking for a new space, but when the chance fell into her lap just before the yoga studio’s current lease was up, Grant decided to take the leap. “This is a perfect example of yoga -- or 'go with the flow,'” Grant said. “When the demand for change comes up, we have two choices: to resist or engage; and let's just say, I saw this as both an opportunity and a challenge and knew I had a whole community to support me.” The move will also coincide with a split into two distinct businesses sharing one common space, as core elements teacher Beth Maher launches her own separate business, simply called Core …

Valentines Are Sweet at the Chocolate Truffle

The Chocolate Truffle expects to sell out of chocolate-dipped strawberries for Valentine's Day.

The Chocolate Truffle is bursting with Valentine’s Day goodies and staff have just one message for customers: don’t wait till the last minute. One of their most popular items for Feb. 14 is chocolate-dipped strawberries, offered in white, milk, and dark chocolate. The Chocolate Truffle only offers these at Valentine’s Day, and they sell out every year, so pre-ordering is essential. Those strawberries are extremely perishable, so they’re not in the store yet, but all other chocolate is ready for pickup now. “They don’t need to wait till the last minute because our chocolate is so fresh,” said sales associate Debbie Donovan. The chocolate is locally-made, and what they have in stock now is pretty much what they’ll have for the season. Last …

Winchester Businesses: Claim Your Patch Listing. It's Free

Retailers are encouraged to claim their Patch Places listing to better promote their business.

When Winchestet Patch got off the ground two years ago this July, editors and freelancers ventured to local businesses in order to collect information for our directory. Now, Patch Places is a spot where users can find descriptions, hours, accepted payment methods, and much more for businesses around town. All users can add events taking place at local spots, can rate the business on a scale of one to five stars, and can add a review. So far, nearly 50 Winchester businesses have grabbed their listing and are making them their own.  But owners of local businesses get extra bonuses when they claim a listing. Owners or managers should search for their business listing and select "claim you listing" in order to make updates to the page. A form…

Winter Market Brings Fresh Produce to Town

The new winter market at Mahoney's brings 25 vendors and many eager customers to one of the garden center's huge greenhouses.

Finding fresh, locally grown produce in the winter can be a challenge, but Winchester’s latest market looks to change that. Mahoney’s Winter Market has been open for three weeks. Held in one of the garden center’s massive greenhouses, the winter market includes 25 vendors selling everything from parsnips to alpaca wool gloves. Paul Waxman, Director of Marketing at Mahoney’s, said the opening day of the market went “gangbusters. Way better than we even hoped for. It was huge.” Last Saturday, in the market’s third week, the parking lot was packed and the vendors were selling fast. Many customers picked up free bags of popcorn near the entrance, then made their way to the beginning of the market. There, Mike Smith of Oakdale Farms was doing a…

Changing Clients' Lives by Changing Their Houses

Julie Rutkowski runs Feng Shui Services of New England and consults with clients using the principles of feng shui.

“Change 27 things in nine days and you will start to see some change in your life,” said Julie Rutkowski, a Winchester-based certified feng shui consultant and owner of Feng Shui Services of New England. It doesn’t matter what you change – you can rearrange pictures or move furniture around – but Rutkowski says it can make a big difference. She sees those changes in her clients’ lives all the time.  Rutkowski does private feng shui consultations for homes and businesses, and also speaks about and teaches classes on feng shui. Feng shui, meaning “wind” and “water” in Chinese, has been practiced for thousands of years. Concepts behind feng shui involve balance and flow of energy throughout the house. When Rutkowski does a private feng shui …

Swizzles Frozen Yogurt Opens to Huge Crowds

The self-serve frozen yogurt shop opened on Saturday and CEO Adam Kessner estimated over 400 customers had been through by mid-afternoon.

There were already 30 people waiting in line when the Winchester branch of Swizzles Frozen Yogurt opened its doors to the public for the first time on Saturday morning, according to CEO Adam Kessner. “You couldn’t have asked for a better day,” one customer said to Kessner, who agreed heartily.  The day was a balmy one for January, with highs in the 50s. Families arrived in droves, parking tricycles and strollers outside the front doors and entering a shop already filled with people. By mid-afternoon, Kessner estimated 400 customers had already come through. Manager Lori Smith said the Swizzles opening was eagerly anticipated, noting people had been stopping by the shop for a few weeks now, asking when they were opening. Swizzles is a self-…
