New Year's Baby First Born at Winchester Hospital in 2013

Hunter Joseph was born to Melissa Parziale of Arlington and Michael Sampson of Stoneham at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday. He weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 ½ inches long.

A New Year's baby was the first born at Winchester Hospital in 2013, according to a hospital press statement. Hunter Joseph was born to Melissa Parziale of Arlington and Michael Sampson of Stoneham at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, according to the statement. Hunter weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 ½ inches long. Parziale was at Winchester Hospital since Monday when her water broke 10 minutes before the New Year’s Eve ball dropped. She quickly went into labor and Hunter was born a few hours later, according to the statement. “The original due date was today, so I thought there was a chance the baby would be coming on New Year’s,” Parziale said in the statement. Arthur Griffin Foundation Serves Winchester

The local Arthur Griffin Foundation is seeking new organizations and projects to fund.

Do you have a fabulous idea for making Winchester an even more beautiful community? If so, you and your organization can contact the Arthur Griffin Foundation. Started by well known photographer and Winchester resident Arthur Griffin, the Foundation exists to support projects designed to help Winchester organizations who are focused on civic beauty. The Foundation has money in hand and is ready to launch its next project. The Winchester Senior Association is the most recent group to reach out to the Griffin Foundation, a simple process according to Judy Katz, WSA administrator. SYFC Names 2012 Academic All-Americans

Congratulations to the Sachem Youth Football & Cheerleading program's Academic All-American team.

The Sachem Youth Football & Cheerleading program announced its 2012 Academic All-American Team during its Year End Party on Nov. 12. Student athletes in the program were evaluated and given a point grade based on their classroom effort and behavior over three marking periods during the 2012 fall season. Points could also be earned for extra work in the SYFC Study Hall and for any “Good News” reports presented to the coaching staff involving community service or outstanding efforts in the school community. The 2012 SYFC Academic All-Americans include: Mario DiBenedetto, Chris Ferrelli, Nate Johnston, Chase Krivickas, Alec Maserejian, Matt Malloy, Scott Murphy, Henry McDonough, Steven Osborne, Drew Peterson, Max Ward and Justin Yew. Art Teacher Awarded WFEE Study Grant

Teacher broadens her knowledge and the art curriculum at McCall Middle School.

It's been a long and rewarding career for art teacher Laurie Schmidt. It statred when she was just a toddler with drawing and using paints. Never wavering in her interest, her path was clear. She attended Massachusetts College of Art and went on to receive her graduate degree from Rhode Island School of Design. In a recent interview she expressed her graditude to the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence for providing her the opportunity to attend the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts where she studied Metal Forging,Fabrication and Finishing. Pondview Florist in Winchester Celebrates 12th Anniversary

This Saturday, there will be 12 percent discounts on purchases and a drawing for a $120 gift certificate at the Mt. Vernon St. florist.

Pondview Florist will celebrate its 12th anniversary this Saturday, Sept. 24, with a day of discounts and drawings. There will be a 12 percent discount all day on in-store purchases and orders delivered locally. At 12:12 p.m., there will also be a drawing for a $120 gift card to the store, which will be valid for a year and can be used incrementally. Throughout the day, light refreshments will be offered as well. Owner Diane DeSimone said she had never done an event like this, but wanted to do something special to celebrate the store’s anniversary. “Twelve years ago, I decided I wanted to buy the shop, and the rest is history,” DeSimone said.
