Winchester Faces Investigation Over School Redistricting

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is investigating a complaint about the redistricting plan devised by Winchester Public Schools.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is investigating a complaint about the redistricting plan devised by Winchester Public Schools, according to the Boston Globe. The Civil Rights office will be reviewing allegations that Winchester Public Schools created a redistricting plan that assigns hundreds of children to "new elementary schools beginning in September (that) discriminates against some of the children on the basis of race, national origin, and limited English proficiency," according to the Globe. Jim Bradshaw, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Education, told the Globe that the probe was opened on Feb. 15 and said, "The complaint is currently under investigation." Redistricting is moving forward. The Government been investigating for months and months and not found any reason to stop it. I am sure the Government will find some issues should have been handled better such as communication and ding the administration but no substantive bias.   more ›

Authorfest Brings Authors and Illustrators to the Classroom

Authors and illustrators visit Winchester students to share their passion.

  More than 20 authors and illustrators visited with and presented their works to students of every grade at each school in Winchester last Thursday. Each author or illustrator spoke about what drives them to write or draw, as well as the importance of pursuing creativity and inspiration.  “This is something that is so uniquely Winchester,” Caren Connelly of the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) said. “WFEE raises $7,500 a year for Authorfest. An author in every classroom to inspire the kids is something that we can truly support.” At Lynch Elementary School, Heather Panahi spoke to kindergarten and pre-k classrooms about her book, “The Bebop Express.” The story follows musicians through all of the notorious jazz …

Sounds like a fantastic event. With school resources dwindling across the country, so many of these worthwhile programs get cut. It's a shame, too. You can't put a price on inspiration. With federal law and funding so closely connected to standardized testing, I fear schools are teaching to a very shallow pool of memorized facts.
