Patrick: We Need to Increase Income Tax to Invest in Our Future

Tell us: do you think we need to increase taxes to strengthen education and transportation?

In his State of the Commonwealth address on Wednesday night, Gov. Deval Patrick proposed raising the state's income tax by 1 percentage point and lowering the sales tax to pay for $2 billion in transportation improvements and early childhood education programs.  "There is no good time to raise taxes. I know how tough the times have been on the people and families of the Commonwealth. And though the worst of the recession is over, many, many families still face tough decisions and have deep anxiety about the future. Free Coffee! Free Tolls! And More Thanksgiving Travel Tips

Here are some tips from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to make your Thanksgiving travel a little easier.

Will you be driving on Thanksgiving night? If so, you can snag a free cup of joe courtesy of the state. And if you're hitting the Turnpike on Wednesday afternoon, you can also get on I-90 (for one hour) without having to pay the toll. Free coffee will be served at all 18 Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) service plazas between 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving until 5 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, courtesy of McDonalds, Burger King and Gulf. Meanwhile, Plymouth Rock Assurance will sponsor free tolls at the Allston-Brighton interchange on I-90 from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21.  Thanksgiving holiday traffic is expected to be at its peak on Tuesday, Nov. 20, Wednesday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 25, according to MassDOT. First Woman to Lead MBTA

Beverly Scott comes to Boston from Atlanta's transit system, MARTA.

The long-vacant job of MBTA general manager has finally been filled. Transportation officials chose Beverly Scott, CEO of the Atlanta transit system. Scott will be the first African-American woman to lead the MBTA, according to the Boston Globe. Her salary will be $220,000, according to an announcement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. In addition to running the Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority, Scott has previously been a top transit official in Sacramento, CA, and Providence, RI. Scott faces many challenges at her new post, including finding long-term solutions to the MBTA's budget problems.
