Swizzles Frozen Yogurt Opens to Huge Crowds

The self-serve frozen yogurt shop opened on Saturday and CEO Adam Kessner estimated over 400 customers had been through by mid-afternoon.

There were already 30 people waiting in line when the Winchester branch of Swizzles Frozen Yogurt opened its doors to the public for the first time on Saturday morning, according to CEO Adam Kessner. “You couldn’t have asked for a better day,” one customer said to Kessner, who agreed heartily.  The day was a balmy one for January, with highs in the 50s. Families arrived in droves, parking tricycles and strollers outside the front doors and entering a shop already filled with people. By mid-afternoon, Kessner estimated 400 customers had already come through. Manager Lori Smith said the Swizzles opening was eagerly anticipated, noting people had been stopping by the shop for a few weeks now, asking when they were opening. Swizzles is a self-…

A Tavola, Best New Restaurant of 2011, Makes Plans for 2012

Vittorio Ettore's new venture, A Tavola, was recently named among the best new restaurants of 2011 by the Boston Globe Magazine. Now, Ettore looks forward to 2012.

A Tavola had only been open three weeks when it was named one the best new restaurants of 2011 by the Boston Globe Magazine in mid-November. Today, after six weeks of running his newest restaurant, chef Vittorio Ettore reflected back on the restaurant’s beginnings and looked ahead to a new year. Ettore was harried last week during the run up to New Year’s Eve, when he was expecting full houses in both A Tavola and his original restaurant, Bistro 5. On Tuesday, after things had calmed down a bit, Ettore said New Year’s Eve went very well. “We were really busy in both places, but the good kind of busy,” Ettore said, meaning the restaurants were full but not so crowded that customers couldn’t get the level of service he likes to give. Ettore …

New Knitting Store Offers Yarn, Classes, and More

Another Yarn opened in mid-October in the former Six Seeds Video space.

A new knitting store has opened in Winchester, and it’s already buzzing with a steady stream of customers. Another Yarn opened in mid-October at 600 Main St., in the space formerly occupied by Six Seeds Video. The knitting store is owner Teresa McGonagle’s first retail venture, and also the start of her second career. McGonagle spent decades working in international financial services for the likes of J.P. Morgan and Citigroup, spending most of her time overseas. When she traveled, she carried her knitting with her on the plane. She also made sure to visit yarn shops wherever she went. “You could find yarn anywhere,” McGonagle said of that time. After awhile, she noticed knitting shops were disappearing and yarn was harder to find. More …

Swizzles Frozen Yogurt Plans Winchester Shop

A small frozen yogurt chain has targeted Winchester as the starting point for its expansion into Massachusetts.

Self-serve frozen yogurt is coming to Winchester, in the form of Swizzles Frozen Yogurt. Swizzles just signed a lease for 10 Mount Vernon St., in the former Mailboxes Business Center location. The Winchester location would be the first Swizzles shop in Massachusetts, founder and CEO Adam Kessner said. He hopes to open the shop by Nov. 1. At Swizzles, customers serve their own soft-serve frozen yogurt from machines dispensing flavors such as pomegranate, New York cheesecake and cookie dough. The most popular flavor is cake batter. Kessner said the do-it-yourself experience is part of what makes Swizzles different from traditional ice cream shops. “To be able to pull the handle on the… ice cream machine for the first time is amazing,” …

The yogurt was extremely disappointing and a rip off. It was partly melted as it came out of the machine's spout. It tasted like it was less yogurt and more frozen water with spoiled flavoring. I was not looking to eat a slush here, but real yogurt. The price is not competitive at all, as other shops/ franchises like Orange Leaf offer a much better price (10 cents cheaper per ounce!) and quality.   more ›

Discussion Begins on T Michaels Replacement

After 25 years, T Michaels, the owner of the largest retail spot in the center, closed its doors.

The Winchester Town Center has seen its share of changes over the past year. From the addition of Piantedosi’s and the Black Horse Tavern to the closing of Cecilia’s and opening of Kids FootStop in that same location. Even away from the center there has been some change. Retail boutiques – Hidden Treasure and Recess Boutique – along Church Street have been opened less then a year. But even with all the influx of new businesses around the center, a Winchester staple for the last 25 years – T Michaels – closed its doors for the final time last month. “Unfortunately it wasn’t a surprise,” Cathy Alexander, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce said. “We’ve known that it might close for the last six months or so. There was a glimmer of …

Sorry to see T. Michael's leave Winchester. They were always welcoming and helpful. Lexington, Belmont and Concord are good models. Winchester needs a good mix so that residents as well as neighboring communities will come here to shop. Parking is still another unresolved issue.   more ›
